The haze cleared.Not Gate.

“So, girl power, huh?” I asked, trying to still my shaking voice.

“Pretty much,” Layla agreed. “Since Cass and Lucky are so close….”

“I get you,” I said in control of my voice once more. “Where’s the party?”

“Jenna’s house over on Gaston. Five-thirty tomorrow. And bring the babe,” Layla said.

I resumed taco night with a wooden spoon and a stir. “Some girl time sounds fun,” I agreed. “I’ll be there, and I’ll pass the invite along to Stella.”

“Who was that?” Stella asked, elbows propped on the kitchen island.

“Layla,” I said, sliding my phone onto the counter.

“I love her style,” Stella said.

“Agreed.” I couldn’t help but admire the woman. She could make a paper sack look chic.

“What did she want?” Stella nosed.

“Invited us to Jenna’s baby shower.”

“Fun!” Stella beamed. “Me too?”

“You got your own personal invite from the style maven herself,” I answered.

Stella shimmied her little happy dance, but then sobered.

“You know, you could go out,” she said.

“I am going out. With you. Tomorrow.”

“No, mom, I meanout. Like with a man.”

I stilled. This wasnotwhere I’d expected baby shower talk to go.

“I know Brent’s not around much because of work….” I started.

“He’sneverbeen around,” Stella pointed out. “Look, I’m not trying to be all in your business, but whatever that relationship was, it’s over, and you know it. He hasn’t even shown his face here in weeks.”

Whatever that was?

Uh-oh. Time to talk to Brent.

“He’s been working,” I explained.

“You deserve better, mom. He was never stepdad material, which was fine. I didn’t need one. And not to be blunt, but he never seemed all that taken with you either.”

“So you want me to ditch Brent?” I nearly choked.

“Honestly, Mom, I doubt he’d notice,” Stella patted my hand. “Find a nice man. Go out,” she suggested. “Do something for yourself.”

I held up a packet of seasoning and grinned, “I think I’ll just have tacos.”
