It was 6.30am when I rose the next morning. I got up and headed straight to my bathroom for a shower. Once I was dressed, I headed into the hallway. I’d opted for a t-shirt and jeans, not my usual look, I rarely wore denim anymore, but it appealed to me today.

First, I checked Lorenzo’s room, cracking the door open just enough to see inside. If he questioned why I was peeking into his room I could easily turn it into another one of myannoying actions. When I looked inside, I could see that the sheets of his bed were thrown back, and the sound of running water signalled that he was showering. Perfect. Next, I made my way back towards my room, but stopped outside of the guest bedroom. I knocked once then twisted the handle. It was locked. I knocked again and pulled my phone out, ready to call her if she insisted on being her usual stubborn self.

My brows raised at the sound of the lock turning. I quickly schooled my expression as she opened the door and glared at me.

“Why was your door locked?” I asked.

“I think he watches me sleep.” she said, a concerned look flashing across her face for a brief moment, before she met my gaze, and her eyes darkened with a deep scowl. “What do you want?”

“Where did you sneak off to last night?” I leaned into the doorframe and folded my arms across my chest as I looked her up and down. She was already dressed and ready for work in a fitted pencil skirt that hugged the curves of her hips, and a powder blue satin blouse. I noticed that she hadn’t buttoned it completely and my gaze lingered on the lace edge of her bra for a moment too long.

She cleared her throat and raised her brows at me. I smirked in response.

“Seriously Adonis?” she hissed, “And where I went last night is none of your business.”

“If you want me to cover your ass again it is my fucking business.” I matched her tone.

“I don’t need you to protect me.” she said and made to close the door on me. I shoved my foot forward and the door bounced off of it.

“No,youdon’t need my protection, but your friends do.”

“What does that mean?” She stepped towards me.

We had been standing in this doorway for far too long, Lorenzo would be done with his shower and dressed any minute now. I could not let him catch us and I still wanted answers.

“Not here,” I said and grasped her arm. “Come with me.”

I tugged her out of her room, and she huffed irritably, but she didn’t wriggle out of my grip. I loosened my hold on her and guided her down the stairs and to the front door.

“Where are we going?” she asked.

“Really Nutmeg, do you ever stop asking questions?” I said half teasing her but continued to rush her out of the door and towards my car.

“Do you ever answer questions?” she bit back as she slid into the passenger seat of my car.

I moved around to the drivers’ side and glanced at her before pulling away down the road.

“Pull up Lorenzo’s number,” I instructed her as I tossed my phone to her. “And send him a message explaining that I’ve taken you for coffee and a chat to clear the air.”

“Ok,”

From the corner of my eye I could see that she was grinning down at my phone, “Dearest Daddy, just to let you know, I’ve taken yourcagnafor coffee to clear the air. Also I had a naughty dream about her last night, and I’m going to act it out. I hope you don’t mind sharing. Anyway, love you lots, big cuddles and kisses, your little Don Don.” she said in a singsong voice.

I slammed my foot down on the break and snatched my phone out of her hand. “You better not have fu-.”

“Of course I didn’t,” she laughed, and I looked up, my eyes landing on the curve of her mouth as desire swept through me. She wasn’t being quite as hostile as usual right now. I think I liked it.

“What do you think would have happened if I had though?” she asked, tilting her head.

“If you had, I think we would need to run far, far away.” I said, and drew my attention back to my phone, scanning over the simple message she had actually sent.

I sighed in relief and tossed my phone back to her. She caught it and frowned at me. I remained silent and drove on. After a few moments I noticed her shift in her seat to look out of the window instead of trying to burn a hole into the side of my head.

When we pulled up into the familiar carpark I climbed straight out of the car. Nutmeg followed and as I rounded the car, I noticed that she was grinning as she stared at the café before us.

“Coffee,” she said under her breath, then turned to me, “I need coffee for this, and breakfast is on you.”

She waltzed off ahead of me, swaying her hips.
