Thatcher is on his feet and backing up. “Tell him I’ll be right there,” the pansy instructs her, then adds with a very strained tone, “There’s nothing going on in here, and Miss King was just leaving.”

“No, Mr. Principal. We were discussing my punishment for being a bad girl.” The sexual allusion makes me want to puke but the disgust on Glenda’s face combined with the horror on Thatcher’s makes it so worth it.

“That is way out of line, Morgan.” Thatcher walks back over to me as Glenda disappears. “This is my career you’re putting on the chopping block.”

Oh, that motherfucker is already chopped, diced, and fried the fuck up. Thatchy just isn’t aware yet. “I’m sure your career will be rejuvenated and fresh soon enough. But I need to make sure we’re all set for the fundraiser tonight.”

“Yes. And I appreciate your help with it, but you can’t keep acting like this.”

“Stop whining, dude. I’ve busted my ass all week making sure everything is in line so your boys will have their funds for state. That is what’s important, right?”

“Yes.”

And he believes it, which is the reason I went to this gullible fool instead of Dad. “Great. Glad we’re on the same page. And don’t forget, attendance is a requirement for everyone.”

He gives me a swift nod, then walks out of his office. I stay propped up on side of his desk and wait a few minutes until I head straight out of the office and to my car. Yeah. There’re still two more periods left but I have to get dressed and ready for tonight.

When I arrive home, Mom peeks at her watch then to me. “Early dismissal?”

“Yep.” Per me.

“Your father didn’t mention it. He only said tomorrow would be an early one for the game.”

Yes. Of course, he fully informed every one of the football agenda. “The fundraiser is tonight.”

“That’s right.” She glances at her watch again like time really has passed since the last time she checked a minute ago. “I can’t make it. I have a meeting with Jack.”

The attorney who’s handled things since my grandpa put him in charge years ago. Interesting. “About what?”

“Just some estate planning. Nothing to worry about.”

“Oh, I’m not.” The only one around here who has to worry is the one who couldn’t keep his dick out of the housekeeper.

“I’ll see you later.” Mom grabs her purse and gazes over her shoulder to me. “Superheroes. Such a fun theme for this year.”

“I know, right.” I smile and head upstairs to change into my outfit that I picked out especially for the night. Mom is so correct. It’s such an amusing theme and the night will be the best one yet. I’ll make sure of it.

“I recall someone making a deal with me,” Otis gripes as he steps up beside the desk.

“I’m just putting in some work orders.” That can totally wait. And my boss understands that since his glare communicates he isn’t happy about it either.

“Get your rear end out of here. Coach is gonna be up here complaining if you miss that event tonight.”

I really don’t care. But I do have an agreement with Otis. “I’ll head out in a few minutes.”

“No, you’ll head out now. You’re not even dressed.”

“Yes, I am.” Otis gives me an impatient look. “I am.” I point to my white button-down and black tie that’s dangling from a hanger on the file cabinet.

“I was told it’s a costume event. Superheroes,” Otis says cheerfully.

Yeah. I heard all about it from Neil and how he’s going as Iron Man. And I can only guess where Otis heard the details from. More than likely King Sr. or King Jr. The first has reminded me to show and the latter picked the theme I’m guessing to further my misery. “It is a costume.” All of it. I’ve been wearing a mask all week. No, for years. “I’m Clark Kent.”

He lets out a little chuckle. “Clever.”
