Aurora

My gaze sweeps across the vast hotel lobby, searching for a hint of a familiar face.

“Hey, Rory! Aurora!” a high-pitched voice shrieks my name. “Hey! Over here!”

Looking in the direction of the shout, I recognize the three grinning young women who’re waving at me. Pleasure and surprise jolt through me as I smile at my old friends from school.

Striding forward, I reach the table where they’re seated.

“What’re you guys doing here?” I ask, glancing at each of the three beautiful omegas before me.

“What do you mean?” asks Helen. Her bright blue eyes contract in confusion. “Aren’t you here to meet us? Weren’t you looking for us just now?”

“Why would I be looking for you?” I ask, mirroring my friends’ confused gazes.

“We were supposed to meet for a reunion dinner,” says Leila, blinking her thick eyelashes at me. “Aren’t you here to see us?”

Kaida, who’d been my closest friend at the omega academy, narrows her eyes at me. “You’re here for someone else, aren’t you?” she asks.

“Err...”

“You didn’t even read the group chat, did you?” Kaida’s knowing gaze pierces through me.

Even though it’s been over a year since we graduated from the omega academy, Kaida still understands me and knows me so well.

My pleasure at seeing my old school friends dissipates.

A sliver of guilt snakes around my gut. “I’m sorry, guys,” I say, struggling to overcome the sudden awkwardness that has fallen over us. “I’m here to meet Jake.”

Kaida’s eyes flash. “You’re still seeing that jerk?”

“Kaida...” I groan. “Please, don’t start.”

Pushing her chair, she gets to her feet and moves closer to me. The concern swirling in her eyes sends another flash of guilt through me, followed by a spark of anger.

Kaida knows me so well but she never understood the way I feel about Jake. Her high-and-mighty attitude still persists and she’s still judging me for loving my alpha.

I hate how she’s not changed over the past year since we graduated school.

Before I can say something, she makes a sudden move and grabs the end of my sleeve, pushing it up my arm.

“Kaida, stop!” I cry out, pushing her away.

But, it’s already too late. Helen and Leila are staring at the dark bruises that cover my upper arm and elbows.

“Stop making a scene!” I hiss, pulling my arm away and pushing the sleeve down. “People are staring at us.”

“He still hurts you,” Kaida hisses angrily. “Jake’s an asshole and he’ll never change. Why can’t you see that? He’s only using you for his sick pleasure. When will you understand that he’ll never be worthy of you.”

The disappointment in her eyes never fails to stab my heart.

This is one of the reasons I grew distant from her the moment we graduated school. I couldn’t bear her relentless lecturing on how Jake’s the wrong alpha for me.

Reaching out, Kaida gently caresses my cheek with her thumb. The gesture is soothing, making me close my eyes against the warmth of her skin. She’s been my best friend since we were ten years old and it hurts to be away from her.

Still, my loyalty demands I stay true to my alpha.
