“Kyra, I can’t ever let you go for you’ve become a part of me, filling the empty void that’s plagued my heart for my entire life. For everything you’ve ever given me, there’s one more thing I ask of you now. Will you be my loving mate for life?”

Tears escape from my eyes, cascading down my cheek as I nod.

“Yes!” I cry, leaping forward into his arms.

He stands up and wraps me in his strongest hug yet. Pulling back, his lips meet mine as we engage in a passionate kiss. Just then, there comes a squeal from beneath us. Parting, we burst out in laughter as we find Traisius clinging to his leg.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better… Zy finds another way to make it so.

The day of our mating seems to rush towards us with increasing speed. Our son grows by the day as well, able to reach and grasp and hold his head up by the time we’re just a few weeks away.

“Are you sure that you don’t want to invite anyone else?” Kyra asks, pressing her cheek against my chest. “I know you’re not close with your family but is there anyone besides the members of the guard that you want there?”

“Nope,” I say, popping the ‘p.’ “Just having you there is enough. We don’t need a large mating ceremony. All I need is you and Traisus to be happy.”

She smiles, snuggling closer to me and kisses my cheek. “You’re a hopeless romantic,” she teases.

“You make my life feel like a romantic tale,” I tell her in a whisper. She goes still under me and takes in a quick breath.

“You’re incredible,” she says after a moment. “I was so lucky to meet you. I can’t wait to officially become your mate in a few weeks.”

Before we can take things to the next level though, Traisus cries out and Kyra gets up to feed him. I watch her walk away, thanking the cosmos above that she pickedmeto seduce all those months ago. Once upon a time I might have been mad about it but now I’m just grateful that fate or the cosmos or the gods worked their plans for our paths to cross.

I’m the luckiest minotaur alive, truly.

As Kyra feeds our son, I begin preparing to leave for patrol. I have a long day ahead of me but I want to ensure that they’re taken care of before I head out so I make a simple kaijeer with plain rice and some fish so Kyra has something to eat today.

Even though I shouldn’t, I can’t help the idle daydreaming about how beautiful Kyra will look in her veils. She’s been completely secretive with me, only discussing her color choices with Phemes and Nova. The thought of seeing her all wrapped up like a present for me to unwrap is enough to make me completely distracted and I almost burn the rice.

Shit! I drop the wooden spoon and rush to take the rice off the heat before it can start to smoke. Clearly it’s time for me to head out, lest I get lost in more daydreams about my mating day.

Work is fine, a bit boring even. Now that I’ve got a life with Kyra and our son, every moment away from them feels twice as long. I used to take my job seriously, feeling that it was my main purpose in life.

But now I have a new purpose. My son is the light of my life. Kyra is my everything. Our mating day can’t come fast enough.

By the time I get off, it’s time to walk my lovely – almost! – mate home. Kyra is ready to go and greets me with a sweet kiss and it sends my heart aflutter. I don’t like that she has to work but maybe someday in the future we can make enough that she doesn’t alwayshaveto.

“So, I had my last meeting with the seamstress,” she says, a grin lighting up her face, the corners of her eyes crinkling. “The last veil is done.”

“Do I get to know any more about them?” I ask, wrapping my arm around her to pull her close.

She giggles and nudges into me, a sparkle in her brown eyes. “Not a chance, big boy. It’s going to be the best surprise when you see each one.”

I pretend to pout, sticking out my lower lip. “Not even a hint?”

“You’ll just have to be surprised. It’s only a few days away now!” Her voice is as light as air and once again, I’m struck by how funny the circumstances were around how we ended up together. Who would have thought I’d be glad someone seduced me into getting them pregnant and would end up mating said person?

Phemes is bouncing Traisus around when we stop by to pick him up. He’s whining but stops as soon as he sees Kyra, reaching out for her with grabby hands.

Then he does the most amazing thing.

He giggles.

My heart seems to stop in my chest and I glance at Kyra to see if she realizes it too. This is the first time he’s ever laughed.
