Page 20 of A Hero For Heather

“Morning,” Ivy said. “Lily will be here soon. Rose is downstairs with Poppy. You’re early.”

“I know,” she said. “Bad habit.”

Heather spent most of her time in the greenhouses or the manufacturing plant. She’d been hired to come up with formulas for products, but in the past year the sisters had given her more responsibility and now she was overseeing the production on the products that belonged to the work she did.

She did have an office at her lab in the greenhouses but came here to work at times. She didn’t mind being alone while she worked but did crave company too.

“Poppy is in the bathroom,” Rose said, coming in next. “She lives in there now.”

“I’ve got a baby on the bladder,” Poppy said, whining. “You wait until it’s your turn and you’ll understand what it feels like.”

Rose held her hand up and made her finger move like a puppet talking. “Whine, whine, whine.”

“Don’t be mean,” Poppy said, rubbing her hand over her belly. “Your niece was kicking the crap out of me last night too. I think she has some of your genetics in here.”

Rose smiled. “I’m going to tell her all about how you were as a child so she can give it back to you.”

Poppy laughed. “I want to be mad over that, but I’m so looking forward to holding her.”

“I’m sorry I’m late,” Lily said, rushing into the conference room.

“You’re not,” Heather said.

“I know,” Lily said. “But I’m normally early and I was late talking to Zane. He had to get a window to replace a broken one for Luke in the cottage and left early to pick it up. So I was getting both kids ready and Willow changed her outfit three times to find the right one to match the scarf she made. Then Ryder decided to throw up on his outfit. Yeah, fun times.”

All Heather heard was Luke’s name. But Poppy asked, “Which scarf was it?”

“Only you would care about that,” Rose said. “Is Ryder okay?”

“He’s fine,” Lily said. “He was hungry this morning and ate faster than he should have and kept screaming for more food. My mistake letting him have it. Willow got him laughing while she danced around with her scarf on and he laughed so much he threw up.”

“Ewww,” Poppy said.

“Get used to it,” Lily said. “Babies are dirty and messy.”

“What happened to Luke’s window?” Heather asked. Three sets of eyes turned to look at her and she wished she hadn’t said anything.

It was the first she’d heard his name in the three weeks since they’d had sex again. They hadn’t talked or texted. Not that they had a way to do it.

She didn’t know what to think other than she couldn’t stop thinking of him.

The question came out without thought on top of it.

“The wind storm we had a few days ago, guess a branch flew through the living room window and broke it in the middle of the night. Luke didn’t even call Zane, but rather went outside into the barn and found something to board it up and then let him know the next morning.”

“That’s horrible,” Poppy said. “Good thing he wasn’t in the living room when it happened.”

“No,” Lily said. “I guess it was like one in the morning, though from what Zane has said Luke could have been up, as he doesn’t sleep much. Zane figured Luke was out of bed with a gun in his hand stalking around the house.”

Heather wasn’t sure why that thought never occurred to her before. That he’d have guns in the house. He’d been in the military. He was going to be a state trooper.

It was both scary and sexy at the same time thinking of him maybe in his boxer briefs, his sculpted abs and muscular arms, the gun at his side, slinking around, popping out behind the corner and pointing it.

Damn, she had to get TV out of her head.

“I would have wet myself,” Rose said. “If glass broke in the middle of the night.”

“I would have too,” Lily said. “Zane would have been up with a gun in his hand moving around the house too.”
