Adelaide quirks her head to the side. “Can we sit?”

Stop acting like an idiot. “Yes, of course. Wherever you want.”

“I like the new place.”

“Thanks. Yeah. We’ve expanded quite a bit, so we needed to spread out,” I say. I guess I have something to show for our two years apart. Wired Reality has grown from an industry name to a household name. Our valuation has skyrocketed, and there’s nowhere to go but up.

Adelaide takes a seat in a gray, boxy lounge chair so gracefully it’s like she’s choreographed the routine.

“Can I get you anything? Water? Coffee?”

“I’ll only be a few minutes,” she says, waving her hand. “Come sit, come sit.”

Of course, she only has a few minutes. When it came to being Adelaide’s boyfriend, my life ran on her schedule. Which, as you can imagine, was superbly inconvenient as a CEO of a hugely successful, yet young tech company.

I pour two glasses of water anyway. I’m a busy man too. She doesn’t just get to take control of my time like that. “To what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?”

Adelaide reaches into her Chanel purse and produces a cream-colored envelope. “You’re officially invited, love.”

I ignore the shiver the word “love” sends down my spine and take the envelope, confused. My name is on the back in gold calligraphy.

Oh no.

“What’s this?”

“Why don’t you open it up and find out.”

I split the envelope open and pull out a hefty invitation that sputters golden glitter onto my lap.

You’re cordially invited to celebrate the engagement of Adelaide Frazer to Theo Wadeltsky.

“You’re engaged,” I say, trying to process it.

“I am,” she answers excitedly.

I force a smile. “Congratulations.”

“We haven’t gone public yet, so I hope you’ll keep it discreet,” Adelaide says, gushing. “Keep reading.”

I stifle a gag.

On a Mediterranean Cruise, August 1st– 14th.

“A cruise?!” I can’t hold back my utter shock. “You want me to come on a cruise with you?”

Adelaide seems nonplussed by my reaction, pulling out a pack of cigarettes from her purse and lighting one up. “Of course. That’s why I’ve invited you, silly.”

I try to ignore the swelling smoke wafting into my nose. I never liked the habit, but she says it keeps her skinny. “W-why?”

She sighs and looks off wistfully. “I know things didn’t go the best between us, Flynn, but you have to know I care for you. Don’t you?”

“Is that why I haven’t heard from you in two years?”

Adelaide purses her lips. “We needed time apart.”

Sheneeded time away from me to get rid of the guilt. That’s how I’ve always seen it.
