She turned her face into my neck and I felt the laugh she let out. “You wish.”

“I do. Desperately.”

The sound of a ringing phone interrupted us, and she got off the bed and scooted around it. The phone ringing was hers, and she lifted it up to her ear. “Hi, Marian.” She listened for a few moments. “Yeah, he’ll live. Broken arm, broken ribs, concussion. The doctor wants to keep him here overnight, so I’ll be staying with him.”

They talked for a few minutes about work-related issues, and then Emilia ended the call, promising to keep our assistant updated. “Marian sends her love. She’s going to make you some white chocolate and macadamia cookies.”

My stomach growled at the thought. Marian’s cookies were second to none.

Emilia poured a cup of water and came over to me, placing the straw near my mouth. I sucked the cool liquid down greedily, my throat parched. After I’d drained the cup, she placed it back on the tray at the end of my bed. “Are you hungry?”

“Yeah, I am. What time is it?”

“Nearly seven. Let me find a nurse and see if you’re allowed to eat something.”

She placed a kiss on my forehead and disappeared out the door. When she arrived back five minutes later, she reached for her phone. “I checked with the nurse and she said it’s fine for you to eat. I’ll order something in. What do you feel like?”

I pondered it for a few moments. “I’m not entirely sure.”

Giving me a smile, she dialed a number and brought the phone up to her ear.

I was released from the hospital around lunch time the following day, after agreeing to follow Dr. Cornett’s strict instructions to rest as much as possible and not overexert myself. Emilia had our town car waiting at a back entrance, and thankfully the drive home didn’t take long.

When we got to our building, I leaned heavily on my best friend as we stepped into our private elevator. My ribs were fucking killing me and moving made it worse. The cast on my arm was heavy and awkward, and my head was splitting. “Fuck.”

“You okay?”

The concern on her face was evident, and I tried hard to hide the pain. “I’ll live.”

She frowned but didn’t say anything else. Once we made it inside the penthouse, I was torn about whether to plonk myself on the sofa or head straight to bed.

“Do you want to sleep or shower?”

The idea of a shower overtook any need to close my eyes. “Am I able to have a shower?”

She nodded. “You can’t get your arm wet, obviously, but otherwise you should be okay. What about a bath instead? That way you can rest your arm on the side and relax in the tub.”

All five bathrooms in our penthouse had large bathtubs to relax in. Emilia led me to the main bathroom on my floor and stared at the freestanding white tub. “Do you want me to stay?”

The idea of being on my own left me cold. “Please.”

She smiled and went over to turn the faucets on. “I’ll wash your hair for you.” After adding some Epsom salts to the water, she poured a small amount of liquid from a different bottle in. Bubbles immediately began to pop up.

I raised an eyebrow. “I’m having a bubble bath?”

“Yep.” Once the tub had enough water in it, she touched it and nodded. “Just the right temp. Let’s get you undressed.”

I wasn’t bothered by the idea of Emilia seeing me naked. It wasn’t as though it’d be the first time; we’d gone skinny dipping when we were teenagers, and she’d helped me dress at the hospital to come home. I remained still as she removed my clothing, then held on to her arm as I stepped into the tub.

The water temperature was perfect, and I let out a contented sigh as I slid into it.

“Wait right here.”

She was gone before I could respond, and when she returned she had what looked like a giant pillow in her hand. “What the hell is that?”

“Sit forward.” I scooted toward one end, bending my knees, and she placed the pink thing behind me. “Okay, lay back now.”

I did and was surprised at how comfortable the bath pillow she’d placed behind me was. Careful to keep my left arm out of the water, I rested the cast on the rim of the bathtub.
