I ducked out of his touch and turned the corner, continuing our walk.

“It’s this way, Gray,” he called.

Gritting my teeth, I whirled and stomped in the other direction. “I knew that.”

Less than a minute later, we stood on the pavement, staring up at the university. Gardens stretched around a grand fountain, the pathways leading up to the front building, where Hartfall University was engraved on a thick, golden sheet mounted above the doors.

Everything was opulent. Smooth marble and polished granite. It looked like some important international building for important things.

I’ve walked past this how many times? Why am I suddenly intimidated?

But the most foreboding thing?

The flagpole that Benjamin Castile had been tied to was now completely concealed by a shimmering dome of magic. The same kind of magic that the Gate was made from. Except this barrier was purely Divine. Combining the energetic forces of light, fire, water, air, and earth created a steel-strong barrier that no one could cross while authorities investigated the murder.

The magic was barely visible, but for a girl who spent her whole life staring at the Gate glinting over the water of the East River, it was easy to spot.

Swallowing hard, I forced out, “Well, are we just gonna stand here?”

Chapter Twelve

Razai frowned. He leaned forward in intrigue. “Isn’t this the part where you use your special finding skills? You’re the one in charge, Detective. You can try to poke around that little display, but I doubt you’ll get anywhere.” He pointed to the barely visible barrier I’d spotted.

My swallow was thick and difficult to get down. My stomach roiled and pinched with nerves. Was I about to hyperventilate?

Razai, clearly noticing my panic, helpfully said, “Well, this should be interesting. Need a barf bag?”

“Can I give you some advice, Professor?”

“Hm?”

“You are so much prettier when you’re quiet.” With a deep breath and a lifted chin, I stepped onto the university grounds.

I pulled my intuition magic to the surface and pressed it forward, keeping my mind on my goal. Clues. The attacks. Anyone responsible. Anyone with useful knowledge.

With the trials happening in a particular part of the college, it was possible that the killer wouldn’t be on campus today. Still, it was worth trying. My power could stretch across any distance, after all. And since I didn’t have anything to connect me to the killer, I’d have to rely on my intuition.

But what I didn’t expect was to find nothing at all. Literally, not even one nudge or tug from my magic. Not in the direction of campus. Not even away from the campus.

It was just… blank.

Fuck. This isn’t good.

“Problem?”

I yelped, my fist flying before I could think.

Razai caught my fist in his huge palm, fingers curling over my hand and easily swallowing my punch.

He’s so warm.

“What was that for?” he complained, looking legitimately hurt.

Rattled, I snapped, “You keep popping out of nowhere and invading my space when I least expect it!”

“You’re flushing. Why are you flushing?”

“I don’t like surprises. Now let go,” I gritted out.
