My best friend fidgeted, frowned, and then nodded sharply. “Well then. As long as we understand each other. If you two need to tie up any loose ends, do it in the back office. I don’t need you taking up my cafe space.”

She stormed over to the door and unlocked it for the three patrons waiting outside, leaving me alone with Razai.

The space between us was thick with my anticipation.

“What a charming woman,” Razai sighed, breaking the tension.

I clapped a hand over my mouth, muffling my laugh so as to not disturb the Azra dragon again. “Yelling is her love language,” I replied through my fingers. “You get used to it.”

“Pass,” he said with a disarming smirk.

Gods, I’m stupid. Of all the people, I chose to work with a fucking archangel.

Chapter Eleven

Razai and I moved to the back office to discuss the public contract I’d be signing as a counselor. I went over it, picking apart details and asking every specific question I could imagine. This was how I would be presented to the world. This was the understanding I needed with diamond-like clarity.

I highlighted another line, and Razai groaned and squeezed his eyes shut.

I rolled mine.

He laid on the overstuffed sofa against the wall, body stretched across the too-short length, head resting on the arm. One leg slung to the side while the other sprawled over the other armrest. His shoulders barely fit on the cushion.

The man was seriously lazy.

“It’s only been an hour,” I chastised. “Stop complaining. What does this mean by ‘must have a working, legal bank account for payment’? I’m going to have a fake name. How can I possibly open a bank account?”

Razai sighed loudly. “I’ll add that to the ever-growing list of shit to ask Castile.”

Bristling, I shot back, “Hey, you hired me. Why am I the only one taking this seriously?” His eyes were closed, but I still hoped he could feel the weight of my glare.

Instead of kneeling and asking for my forgiveness, however, he simply stretched like a cat, then undid two more buttons on his shirt. The few more inches of his muscled chest and golden skin mocked me.

I darted my gaze back to the contract. There was no denying it. The archangel was gorgeous. But they all were, weren’t they?

He wasn’t so special.

I crossed my legs and viciously circled what I’d just highlighted. That was an important one. Something that could ruin everything—

“I think we’re going to be great friends, Gray,” Razai informed me cheerily. The sound of fabric rubbing and shifting told me he’d readjusted.

“Not before we get through this contract.” The next lines were clean and unproblematic. I moved to the following section.

“How about we stop here, and I send your list of concerns to our esteemed president? Then, you and I can get to know each other.”

“You’re distracting me with stupid questions. That’ll just make this take longer,” I warned. Damn. He made me forget the section I’d just read. Now I’d have to start over.

Case in point.

I added, “Just sit down like a good employer and walk me through…”

A large, male hand settled over the contract, obscuring the entire page.

Swallowing hard, I slowly glanced up.

In my focus, I hadn’t noticed him walk to the other side of the desk.

As he leaned forward, bracing his hands on the desk and looking down on me, his shirt gaped open. Ridges and lines of toned muscle told me this man didn’t spend all his time lounging around.
