And pain.

Deep, soul-cutting pain.

“Then you tell me,” I said. “What do you have to do, Razai? Why are we here right now? What do you want?”

His turmoil settled into the background, and he gave me a shaky sort of smile that couldn’t quite hide how unhinged he felt.

It scared me more than anything else I’d seen tonight. It felt like I was seeing his real face. His truest form.

And it was broken. Far more broken than I could have ever imagined.

He stepped back into the darkness.

“Razai…” I pleaded, inching forward.

“I’m sorry, Gray. This isn’t how I would have planned things.” He shifted Azra’s weight so he could hold her in both arms.

What was he doing?

When he turned his back to me, I knew.

He can’t. He wouldn’t. This can’t happen.

Sure enough, Razai tipped Azra over the side of the building.

And let go.

I was running before she began to fall. The concrete ledge punched into my stomach as I reached for her. My fingers touched a lock of hair, but it would have been easier to catch sunlight in a hurricane.

That was it.

That was all.

My best friend, my sister, was falling to her death.

There was no time to think.

No time to consider or think of my own fate.

My sister was about to die, and a world without her was a world I refused to live in.

I jumped onto the ledge.

And then I leapt off.

Razai’s call didn’t matter in the rush of wind in my ears.

My body tilted downward, hands reached forward and feet held together. I grasped the back of Azra’s jacket and caught her waist.

And now the ground rushed toward us. We had seconds to live. The world was an empty roar. Like it screamed for us too.

I closed my eyes, reached deep inside myself.

The deepest part of my magic met me with open arms. It felt foreign, still a little pumped with the elixir too.

This was the part that not even I dared to look at or think of. A dead part of my soul from another lifetime. Another Gray Wilder from another life.

My chest bulged with untouched power. My spine and shoulders burned and tore.
