Just until I couldn’t handle the tension any longer, just as I was about to plead with him—me, plead—he gave me a savage smirk and hooked his fingers.

And then he didn’t stop.

I covered my mouth, muffling the noises I couldn’t hold back, not knowing where we were or who was around. But after a while, my care for being overheard disappeared. Head thrown back, spine arched and sheets bunched in my fists, I cried out and whimpered and gasped without restraint.

He watched me through the fan of his lashes with hunger. Not a hint of joking or playfulness. Just complete focus and ravenous lust as he pulled ecstasy from me. “Just like that, Gray,” he urged. “Don’t stop.”

It was all too much. The sensations, Razai’s intensity, my raw nerves. So I only managed a breathy, “Fuck.”

But the angel wasn’t about to let me off easy. His movements slowed. He lowered himself down.

Oh, shit.

“Don’t look so panicked,” he reassured, looking not even a little apologetic. “Promise I’ll be gentle.”

“That’s… not the point…” I gritted out as his head dipped lower. The moment his tongue brushed my clit, I knew I was done for. Fingers in his hair and hips gyrating, I climbed closer and closer to that peak.

His eyes drifted closed in bliss as he tasted me, coaxing me further.

It didn’t take long. My head fell back as I came. He gripped my hips and held steady as the fire burned to an inferno and then began to fade. Razai kissed and nibbled the inside of my thighs while I lay there, breathing hard.

Had it always been that good? I certainly don’t remember it ever actually being that good.

He pulled my hospital gown down and lay beside me again, pulling the blankets over us. Catching sight of my face, he said, “Oh, don’t worry. That’s not where I wanted to end either.” Then, he called, “We’re ready for you, Doc!”

I had a moment of absolute mortification before the door opened with a surprising gust of wind, revealing a woman I’d never seen before. She stared at us through round spectacles, her keen eyes narrowing. “Razai, stop harassing my patient.”

Chapter Forty-Eight

Her stern words made me want to straighten and salute her, and even as I tried to kick Razai away, he tightened his hold and cuddled deeper, nuzzling my neck.

While I spluttered and tried to push him off and kick his ass to the next universe, the healer regarded me with professional disapproval. “If you strain yourself and ruin my hard work, I’ll make you mop these floors for the rest of the year. Razai! I will emphasize that my hospital is not a bed and breakfast. Am I clear?”

His voice was muffled in my hair as he confirmed, “Absolutely.”

Since I’d been scolded into stillness, I just waited while she tsked and strode forward, clipboard in hand. She looked like any ordinary mortal. Her long brunette hair was pulled back in a clean braid, and those telltale human crow’s feet crinkled as she studied her charts.

“I assume you’re the healer,” I stated.

“What gave me away?” she deadpanned.

Oh, I liked her.

“The fact that you haven’t killed Razai yet. Only someone under the Hippocratic oath would refrain.”

She grinned and looked over my shoulder. “I think I like her, Razai.”

“We all have so much in common! Should we do each other’s nails too?” he replied, still buried deep in the blankets.

“You’re not as funny as you think you are,” the mage warned. Then addressing me, she said, “I need you to sit up, Gray. Looks like the painkillers have finally worn off, and you’re not in very much discomfort.”

I wrestled myself out of Razai’s arms and set my feet on the floor. The hospital gown made it easy for the mage to check me for… well, I don’t even know. My vital signs? All the facial bruising from getting punched was gone. Only a slight redness on my legs remained where I’d been burned and stabbed.

She felt up and down my spine with her cold finger, checked my temperature, and pressed into my temples from both sides. After the bizarre exam, she scribbled on her charts. “You’re doing fine. You took to the spells and elixirs better than expected. If you have any odd urges in the next few days, contact me immediately.”

“What do you mean by odd urges?” I asked, thinking about the man lying in bed behind me. Not that I didn’t have those urges before today, but still. I had to consider all possibilities.

“Eating grass is a common one. Not too harmful but refrain if you can manage. No need to ingest pigeon shit or dog piss if you can avoid it.”
