“Razai…” I warned. “If you’re awake, I’m going to kill you.”

“Fine, then I’m asleep.” His words were raspy with sleep.

“I knew it. Have you been awake this whole time?”

“I would have slept longer if you hadn’t been massaging me with your ass. Fuck, woman, if you wanted to propose, just do it already.”

I tried elbowing him, but he caught me easily. His chuckle sent flutters through my core, making me deathly aware of just how close we were. And of how, despite everything, I wanted to sink into his arms and wrap myself in his heat.

But I should still work to get away. Sit up. Pretend like the throbbing between my legs didn’t exist.

“Don’t strain yourself,” he urged. “You’re still healing.”

I squeezed my eyes shut while he caressed an exposed sliver of skin at my hip. “How bad was it?”

“Could have been worse. You’ll heal up nicely, but it’ll be uncomfortable for a few weeks.”

“But how?”

“Well, you got stabbed—”

“I mean how am I able to move said leg and not scream? You said you got me a healer, not a miracle worker.”

“I have connections.”

“Such an archangel response,” I grumbled.

“I brought in a mage. Better?”

I froze and looked over my shoulder. “A mage?”

Chapter Forty-Seven

His hair was messy and sticking up at all angles. One green eye glimmered. “Yes. I’m sure you’ve heard of them. They handle little humans who have their own kind of homely magic, and they live in all Territories of the world.”

“Stop being a smart-ass. I know what a mage is. But they don’t have healing magic like this.”

He didn’t reply. The silence seemed to mock, That’s what you think, Detective.

“Godsdamnit,” I whispered, facing away again. “We really don’t know anything about mages at all, do we?”

“You may not. I know quite a bit. You should consider getting to know one.”

“I think I will,” I admitted. My leg was sore, but there wasn’t even a heavy bandage on it. Even flexing my quads only gave a twinge of discomfort. “Do all archangels hire mages as often as you?”

“No,” he answered. “No, even the ones who do purchase charms still want to keep it a secret. They try to exist without mages as often as possible. It’s a strained relationship. Angels desire a mage’s power all while resenting them for having something they want. I approach it differently.” His hand spread over my abdomen, softly caressing.

“How is that?” I said with a hard swallow. I’d just pretend like he didn’t affect me. That’s all.

“Hm,” he said, contemplating. “It’s simple, actually. You approach them like they are your equal. Because, well… they are. You treat them with respect. Respect and humility go a long way.”

I smirked. “Humility isn’t something I’d assign to you.”

“Damn. You caught me,” he shot back, fingers dipping into the valley of my waist. “You should meet her soon.”

I swallowed hard and squeezed my eyes shut. “Who?”

“The mage. She’s an old friend, and the kind of person you want on your side.”
