He nods. “But you wouldn’t be reacting this way if she wasn’t.”

Of course, he’s doing this just to get answers out of me. “Fuck you, Ezra. Don’t go sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong.”

It’s so like him to do this, get me all worked up so he can figure out my secrets. I don’t know why I keep falling for it.

I don’t know why I keep lying to him about my past. Truth is, his isn’t any different from mine. He probably suffered a lot more than I did, but we’re two sides of the same coin. I trust Ezra with my life; it shouldn’t be so hard for me to share that part of it with him.

I wasn’t completely wrong when I said my parents were dead. Jihoonisdead. I’d found out soon after the fire when it was reported on the news.

And as far as I’m concerned, Bora is completely and utterly deceased to me.

Without another word, I turn to leave the room, ignoring the envelope on the table.

“Jay.”

I stop, my hand resting on the door handle.

Shit. Have I gone too far? Ezra’s my brother, but he’s still my leader, and I’m stepping way out of line by talking to him like this.

When I turn around, I’m expecting him to hand me my ass, but he says, “I’m meeting with Antonio in San Diego for the next two days. He needs the rundown, and I need a couple days to myself. I’m leaving you in charge while I’m gone.”

Me. In charge of the Eastlake Syndicate?

Absolutely the fuck not.

I shake my head. “No, man. I’m not leader material.”

“I don’t believe that, brother. And I don’t think you do, either.”

I stick my hands in my pockets, searching for my lighter, but then I remember I threw it into the fire twenty minutes ago.

Dammit. I need to burn something.

“I don’t want to do it. I don’t want that kind of responsibility. Give it to Lee.”

Ezra leans back in his chair, interlaces his fingers, and places them in his lap. Stares at me in that way of his.

“It’s just for two days, Jay.”

I shrug. “I don’t want to do it,” I say baldly.

He watches me for a few more moments, and I can’t tell what he’s thinking. He’s been my best friend for years. I know him just as much as he knows himself, but right now?

I don’t know what’s going through his mind, but he looks like he wants to throttle me.

Fine. If he wants to beat my ass, I’ll let him. I could use a good fight right about now.

Ezra stands up, and I take my hands from my pockets, readying myself in case he comes flying at me.

But he doesn’t.

He nods, as if having a conversation with himself in his head, and walks around the table to where I’m standing by the door.

“Alright, then. I’ll go let Lee know he’s in charge while I’m gone,” he says before leaving.

I let out a sigh and roll my neck, easing away the tension that’s been sitting there.

If I wasn’t mistaken, Ezra looked disappointed.
