Benji checks something on his phone. “Boss said you can leave your room now.”

“Don’t you mean my cell?”

He looks up from his phone, his piercing blue eyes looking me up and down. “I see why he likes you.”

My brows raise. “Oh? And why is that?”

Pocketing his phone, he leans against the doorframe and crosses his tatted arms over his chest. “You defy him. You don’t take his orders lying down. You wrecked your room your first night here and made no apologies or excuses for it. He’s not used to that. Especially not with you. No one can get away with a fraction of the things you do.”

I move to sit on the edge of the bed, letting my feet dangle just over the hardwood floor. “I wasn’t always that way. Being back here brings out a different side of me.”

He nods in understanding. “I know. I like that.”

He’s not trying to come on to me, but his words affect me more than I care to admit. And despite being angry about being locked in here for four days, I smile.

I like that Ezra’s men notice how I am with him. It shows that I’m not some weakling to be walked all over. This version of me would never have dated Ezra to begin with. I would have walked away as soon as I saw him for who he really was.

But now I’m stuck here, and I don’t know if he’ll ever let me go.

“How long have you known Ezra?” I ask Benji curiously.

He shrugs. “Seven or eight years. Why?”

“What was he like before he met me?”

He pushes off the doorframe. "Now isn’t the time to have that conversation.”

“Why not?”

Shaking his head, he walks away before I have a chance to ask him anything else.

Whatever. I’ll find out, eventually.

The house is so quiet, I think everyone is still asleep, but to my dismay, Jay is sitting at the island drinking a beer when I walk in. I pause at the entrance, contemplating whether I should go back to my room or not, but then he looks up at me.

It’s actually more of a glare, really.

“Good morning,” I say quietly, going to the fridge. He doesn’t say anything, just stares at me with that intense, penetrating gaze.

“If you’re going to eye-fuck me, Jay, you could at least speak to me first,” I grumble, pulling a pack of bacon and a carton of eggs out of the fridge.

He grunts. “My friends call me Jay.”

“Is that not what I just called you?” I pull a frying pan out of the cabinet beside the stove. “How do you like your eggs?”

“You’re not my friend,” he says harshly, ignoring my question, that deep voice of his penetrating my core, “so you can call me Jayden.”

I roll my eyes. I know he’s trying to intimidate me, but I’m not falling for it. I spent enough time around guys like him, and I can see right through his bullshit.

“Great!” I exclaim with mock enthusiasm. “Eggs?”

“Sunny side up.” He finishes his beer and tosses the glass bottle into the trash can by the fridge from where he’s sitting. He looks at me and gives me a self-satisfied grin.

I smile at him sweetly. “Just like your wonderful personality, Super Grump 5000.”

His face falls into a scowl. I turn around quickly, biting my bottom lip to keep from laughing and start cooking.

“Youareaware it’s one in the afternoon, right?” he asks from behind me. I can feel his eyes on me as I move around the kitchen.
