Lee nods. “And why weren’t they checked at the door?”

“That either means our security is seriously lacking, or someone else is working against us.”

I don’t know which situation is worse. The possibility that two or more of our own are working for the other side is starting to stress me out.

I look at Ezra. “Have you had a chance to talk to anyone?”

He shakes his head. “No. Two security guards were killed on the scene, and the others aren’t returning my calls. The only reason I know they’re still alive is because they went to see Med.”

We sit in silence, thinking about everything that could mean.

I open my mouth to say something, but a loud banging sounds from down the hall.

“I guess the little girl’s awake,” I mumble, crossing my arms over my chest and leveling a look at Ezra. “We don’t need this kind of distraction, Ezra.”

He grits his teeth. “Don’t look at me like that, Jay. I need her.” Without another word, he gets up and leaves the kitchen.

I let out a frustrated breath and look at Lee and Benji. “I’m serious. We can’t afford for Ezra to be sidetracked because of her.”

I’ve seen firsthand what can happen to a criminal in love.

Jinyoung, my former gang leader in Seoul, died because he was so obsessed with his girl, he didn’t even notice the???until it was too late. Since then, I’ve tried to steer clear of romance as much as possible, but, God, do I crave it.

Not that I really have much of a choice. Women lately have been avoiding me like the plague. Maybe it’s better that way. We’re not sweet and gentle. We don’t believe in having time away from our partners for the sake of a healthy relationship.

Our love is harsh. Brutal.Obsessive.

We care deeply and love passionately without regard for what’s socially acceptable. We take what we want, and we make no apologies for it. I can’t fault Ezra for feeling the way he does about Maya. Hell, if that were me, I’d keep my girl locked away, too. Keep her safe from the crazy fucks whose only purpose in life is to put us in the ground.

But Ezra being so distracted is bad. Because when he’s not focused on work, he’s focused onher, and nothing else matters. I don’t want my brother to fall victim to the same fate as my late leader. I don’t think I could bear that.

Lee shrugs and tosses his banana peel into the garbage. “He’s in love,” is all he says, as if that makes the situation any better.

I look at Benji now. “Am I the only one in this house with some goddamn sense?”

But neither of them is paying me any attention. They’re turned to the hall where Maya is trying to get out of Ezra’s arms.

“Put me down!” she yells, punching at him. Her onslaught doesn’t do anything to deter him. He just smiles at her like she’s the most adorable thing he’s ever seen.

It makes me sick.

“I’ll let you go if you promise you won’t try to run away,” he says calmly. “Or kick me in the balls,” he adds a bit sharply.

That has her attention. She settles down, and he lowers her to the floor, her breaths coming out in aggravated huffs.

“I only make promises I know I’ll keep,” Maya says coldly. She rolls her eyes when Ezra levels her with a look. “Fine. Whatever.”

Slowly, as if waiting for a bomb to detonate, Ezra lets her go. After she fixes her clothes and hair, she looks up and sees Lee, Benji, and me standing there staring at her. Lee looks at the way her nipples poke through the t-shirt she’s wearing, while Benji ogles her legs. I, on the other hand, can’t stand her, so I grab a beer out of the fridge and leave the kitchen.

“Come find me when you’re not all eyeing the little girl like she’s fresh meat.”

CHAPTERSEVENTEEN

MAYA

Little girl.

I really wish he would stop calling me that.
