CHAPTERSEVEN

MAYA

Several hours later,I’m finally feeling human again.

After sleeping until six, I was feeling well enough to begin packing. I spent a few hours packing up all of my belongings, and they’re currently in suitcases under my bed. I didn’t touch the bathroom since I still need to do my hair and makeup. As soon as we get back from the club tonight, I’m hauling ass out of here.

“How do I look?”

I turn around at the sound of my roommate’s voice. Sarah’s standing in my doorway in a skintight burgundy dress that does wonders to accentuate her curves and breasts. Black-heeled, red-bottomed, open-toed stilettos grace her feet, and from where I’m standing I can see she’s painted her toes black as well. Her golden blonde hair is curled and styled so that it all spills over one shoulder. Her lips are painted the same shade of red as her dress, and her makeup is smoky and dramatic, making her light blue eyes pop.

“Wow,” is all I can say as I stare at her, eyes and mouth wide.

She squeals and claps her hands. “That’s the reaction I want from Blue!” She trots into my room and plops down on the bed, careful not to rumple her dress even though it’s sticking to her like a second skin. “You don’t know what you’re wearing yet?”

Thankfully, she doesn’t seem to notice that my room looks emptier than usual.

“I can’t choose between these two.” I gesture to the two options hanging on my closet door. One is the same kind of dress as Sarah’s, except it’s black and far less revealing. The other is a rich navy color. It’s got quarter-sleeves and hugs my torso without showing too much of my chest. It hugs my waist and flares out around my thighs, stopping just above my knees. Shimmering silver thread is woven throughout the fabric.

“I love this one because it reminds me of the night sky,” I murmur, running a hand over the rich texture.

It's also my favorite dress that Ezra ever bought me, but I can’t tell her that.

Sarah goes to stand in front of the two dresses, tapping a black-painted nail against her chin as she surveys the two options.

“If you wear this one,” she points to the black dress, “we’ll be twinning.” She turns to me with a devilish grin. “Blue and Gray will eat their hearts out.”

“Gray?”

Sarah holds a hand up to stop me. “Before you start, it’s short for Grayson. Hisactualname.”

I chuckle and wave a hand. “Okay, okay. And what do you think about the other one?”

She turns back around, running her fingertips over the soft material. “It’sreallybeautiful. But I don’t know if it’s quite club material.”

I nod in agreement. “It’s not. But it’s my favorite.”

She picks up the dress and hands it to me. “There’s your answer.”

I change quickly and put on my strappy black heels. Sarah does my makeup to match the dark colors of my outfit, and then she does my hair. She gives me the nineties half twists, but instead of finishing them off with butterfly clips, she places small, dainty star clips at the ends of each twist and all throughout my curls.

“Done,” she chirps with a pleased smile. I turn my head from side to side in the bathroom mirror. “Hopefully, all the clips will stay in.”

I smile as I examine her work. “Wow,” I breathe. “I look...”

Beautiful is the word I’m looking for. For the first time in years, Ifeelbeautiful. Of course, Ezra made me feel beautiful, but the more comfortable I got in the relationship, the more I let myself go. He never minded, but it’s hard to love yourself when your toxic partner and crippling mental health made you want to lie in bed and eat all day. I’m actually excited about going out tonight.

Ten minutes later, the doorbell rings. Sarah quickly checks herself over in my bathroom mirror one more time before answering the door for Blue and Gray. She squeals and throws herself on who I assume is her date.

I run my hands down the front of my dress nervously as the two men walk in. Sarah’s smile is big and bright as she leads them into the living room where I’m sitting on the couch nervously wringing my hands. I stand up and smile.

“Blue, Gray, this is my friend Jasmine,” Sarah says, grabbing my hand and pulling me towards them.

Blue is incredibly handsome. He’s tall and slightly muscular, with tanned skin, dark brown hair, and blue eyes. His dazzling smile shows off the straightest, whitest teeth I’ve ever seen. I can see why Sarah’s so crazy about him.

He grabs my hand and shakes it firmly. “Nice to finally meet you, Jasmine. I hope we weren’t too noisy the other night.” He smirks, knowing damn well they were.

My cheeks burn as I return the shake. “Oh, it’s okay. I wasn’t listening.”
