He swipes a hand through his hair and looks down. “Because when I left him, he was still breathing.”

I don’t know what I expected, but this isn’t it. “You didn’t kill him?”

“I said he was breathing when I left him.” Barely, but still.

“Where did you leave him?”

“Floating in the Charles.”

My hand moves to cover my mouth in shock. “He can’t swim.”

“Well, that’s too bad for him. I told you, I wouldn’t kill him. But that doesn’t mean to say the river won’t.”

Silence hangs between us.

All I can see is Cam’s face, hurting me. Making me suffer.

The man I used to love is long gone, and he’s never coming back.I need to keep telling myself that.

I chew on a fry, not really tasting it. Deep down, I knew this had to happen. What did I honestly expect when I called Fynn?

“You know you can’t talk about this to anyone,” he adds, as if I’m dumb.

“I know that,” I say, my voice quiet.

“Not the shrink, your best friends, your parents, no one.”

“I get it, Fynn.”

“What are you thinking?” He looks like he doesn’t want the answer to that.

“I think you’re the bravest man I know and a part of me is sorry.”

“Sorry? For what?”

“For dragging you into this mess, for dealing with him…”

A flash of annoyance crosses his face again. I don’t see that face very often.

His next words are very precise. “You didn’t drag me. I chose to come. I wanted to come. My only regret is I didn’t deal with him the way I wanted to. So don’t ever say that to me again.”

I look down at my hands. They’re shaking. “A part of me knew how you’d react. Maybe subconsciously, I wanted that. I knew that you’d want to kill him. What does that make me?”

“Human?”

“No, Fynn, that makes me a monster.”

“He’s the monster, after what he did to you.” He steps closer to me. “You are not like him. You’re not like…us!”

I swallow hard.

“You’re all that’s good in this world, Sage,” he goes on, exasperated. His hand reaches out to cup my chin gently, tilting my face so I look at him. “You are everything this world needs. Don’t ever think any less of yourself. You deserve everything life has to offer.”

I feel tears roll down my face before I’m even aware. I wipe them away briskly as he pulls me into his chest.

“You’re a good guy,” I say. “I don’t know what I would do without you.”

“Anything you need.” He kisses me on top of my head. “Anything, anytime, you always call me. Promise me.”
