“That feels so much better,” he says, the relief clear in his voice. “Thanks.”

“Wonderful,” Rob says. “I’ve brought your guy. He’s worried about you.”

Tanner holds out his good arm and beckons. I go without hesitation or question, hugging him the moment I reach him.

“I’m okay,” he promises, kissing my hair.

“You dislocated your shoulder. How are you fine?”

“It hurts a lot less now.”

“But it still hurts?”

“Yeah. I need to rest it for a few days.”

“Some painkillers wouldn’t hurt,” the medic says. “I’ll leave you to it.”

“Me too,” Rob says. He shuts the door on his way out.

Tanner strokes my chin. “Are you okay? You look pale.”

“I’m worried about you.”

“You don’t need to be, baby.”

I glance over my shoulder. We’re definitely alone, and there’s so much noise coming from the changing room as the players celebrate their win that I doubt anyone will overhear anything we say.

“But I am, Daddy. I—” I shake my head.

“What? Tell me, boy.”

“It could have been worse, couldn’t it?”

“Potentially. Injuries are part of the game.”

“Shouldn’t you have seen a medic as soon as you got injured?”

He shakes his head. “There were five minutes of the match left, and the likelihood of me needing to do much was slim to none. Stopping the match would have been more trouble than it was worth. I’ve popped my shoulder out before. I know what it feels like, so I knew that was all that was wrong. It’s no big deal.”

I blink at him. “It’s a big deal to me.”

He smiles. “I know, baby. I’m sorry.”

“I don’t know if I can do this every time you have a match. I’m always going to be worrying that you’ll come home with a worse injury.”

He strokes my cheek. “You don’t have to come to games.”

“That wouldn’t be very supportive. Would it?”

“Wren, I don’t need you to be at games to know you love me.”

“It also won’t stop me worrying.”

“I know.” He cups my face and coaxes me to look up into his beautiful blue eyes. “Do you want me to quit?”

I raise my eyebrows. “What? No. Of course not.”

“Because if you can’t handle me getting injured, I will. Nothing is more important to me than you. I chose rugby over you once. I’ll never do it again.”
