‘Where’s Bruno now?’

‘He’s at your home. He’s checking the security footage at the factories.’

‘Good.’ I was pleased he was in the same building as Serafina. That at least gave me peace of mind. I knew I had ten minutes tops, so I closed my eyes and allowed the rhythm of the car to carry me away.

My phone vibrating against my chest brought me to.

Without looking at who it was, I answered.

‘Yes.’

‘Brother-in-law.’ There was no amusement or any feeling at all wrapped around the tone with which the title was spoken. Just the instantly recognisable English intonation.

Instantaneously, I knew I was speaking to Dante.

‘Giordano,’ I reciprocated. ‘What can I do for you?’ I uttered sarcastically.

‘Some simple math.’

‘Math?’ I questioned, shaking my head as I looked out the window to check our position. Happily, I saw we were less than five minutes from Bovalino beach and home.

‘I have two sisters.’

‘You do,’ I agreed, sitting bolt upright, and with my interest piqued I threw off the brief mantle of comfort I’d been enjoying.

‘And right at this minute, both their lives are at risk,’ he stated.

‘They’re safe.’ My voice increased in volume at his accusation.

‘Have you found him then?’

‘No. Not yet.’ I hated admitting the fact.

‘Exactly.’

The silence between us on the line was deafening.

‘You have one sister,’ he carried on.

‘What are you getting at?’ Anger enveloped me, clouding my vision with swathes of red.

‘Is your sister safe?’ he questioned.

Dante asked the question just as the cell phone in the car started blowing up and realisation hit me like a fucking freight train.

‘Answer it,’ I mouthed at Aldo in the rear-view mirror and pointed through the centre console at the phone.

‘Why do you ask?’ I questioned Dante as calmly as possible.

I could hear half the conversation Aldo was having and as he pulled the car over in a rest stop and turned to look at me, without even speaking I understood just what had gone down.

‘How does it feel, Salvatore?’

‘Where is she?’ I demanded.

‘We’re on our way to England, I’m gonna show her the sights.’ He laughed at his own joke. ‘Your family all but ruined mine. Serafina only married you to save us and now my sweet baby sister has been harmed at the negligence of your brother… A sister for a sister.’

His last comment hit home. I could hear my own mantra deep inside my head.
