‘Yes, I’m sorry… he grabbed me, told me I was his and that you were coveting a position that was supposed to be his.’

‘FUCK!’ His sudden shout made me jump and his arms came around me again to hold me to him. ‘He fucking touched you?’ A tirade of Italian swear words left Salvatore’s mouth through his clenched teeth.

‘I’m certain he was high on something,’ I added, so Salvatore could understand how a so-called man like Enzo would have the balls to come into his home and touch his wife, his property.

‘Why didn’t I hear you shout for help?’

‘I didn’t want today to be ruined. My family needed it. Nonno said you needed it to solidify your position and I didn’t want to ruin any of that. I took my knife to him, and he let me go.’

I felt him inhale quickly as he tried to quench his obvious anger.

‘Good girl… fucking piece of scum. When I find him and find him I will, he’ll also get to see and feel my knife.’

‘I think Enzo might have taken Mia. He said he preferred to have younger flesh. Thinking on it… I think he might be who you’ve been looking for, Salvatore. He took Zeno under his wing… Could it have been him who took your mama and all the others?’

‘He could be,’ Salvatore nodded as his eyes darkened at the prospect. ‘And if it’s him, he will pay.’

I wasn’t even shocked at myself when the words he spoke gave me pleasure. I was my papa’s daughter after all. I’d always been convinced I had a darker side to me and now I finally knew it was true. If Enzo had Mia, I wanted to be there when Salvatore caught up with him and if he’d let me, I knew I would willingly take the vile, depraved bastard’s life. In my own head, I realised I would even be able to quantify his death. I could discern that I would be saving many others by the act.

And that was enough.

‘I just want Mia back. Please… I should have told you earlier, I’m sorry.’

‘We’ll get her back, I promise you.’ I heard his promise and the careful words he used. When his hand rubbed up and down my back in concern, I realised he hadn’t mentioned if he thought she’d still be alive or not.

Unexpectedly, the sound of men’s voices travelled up to us from below on the warm night air. I listened intently, trying to ascertain what was going on but got nowhere. Then I heard Gabriel’s anger in what he was shouting, and then finally his pain as the Italian he was using turned into screams.

‘Salvatore?’ I questioned as fear gripped me.

‘Jnr,’ Romeo shouted from outside our door.

‘Come in.’

A draft of cooler air found my back as the door opened and instinctively, knowing he had news, I turned to face the sight of Romeo and then of Bruno as the open doorway was filled with angry looking men.

‘We’ve got her.’

‘You’ve found her?’ I heard the desperation in my tone and felt the tears that were instantly flowing freely over my cheeks.

Initially, I struggled against Salvatore’s hold, needing to be nearer to Romeo when he answered, but Salvatore reaffirmed his hold on me. Even without knowing anything further about Mia, I understood he was instinctively trying to protect me by forcing me to stay in his arms and I stopped struggling.

‘She’s a mess, but she’s alive. She’s unconscious. Whoever it was has beaten her and I think by the amount of missing clothing he’s also assaulted her.’

Gabriel’s earlier pain once again sounded out from inside the house.

‘Oh, dear God!’ The words fell from my mouth, and I clamped my hand over my lips to silence myself.

‘Have you found anything else?’

‘Nothing here nor down on the beach,’ Bruno answered.

‘Use whatever manpower and resources it takes, but I want Enzo Ferraro found.’

‘Boss.’ Bruno, without questioning the man he’d been instructed to hunt, turned for the door and was gone as quickly as he’d arrived.
