The man leading us to our doom clicks on a flashlight then signals for us to follow.

Gabriel pulls me toward him as he leans down. “Cartel,” he whispers, nodding to the guy in front. I have no clue how he knows that, maybe he’s seen him somewhere before or even worse worked with him. Either way, he seems sure of it.

Why on earth would the cartel support a man like King? He can no longer push their guns or launder their money, so what purpose do they have to keep this shit up?

I can’t begin to think of the insane reasoning behind it, but when this is all said and done, I hope the Reapers and the Sons kill every last one of them for giving King the power to destroy us the way he has.

We walk into a brightly lit room, and I shield my eyes as they adjust to the light.

I peek around Gabriel, who’s keeping me tucked away behind him safely. There’s two floors. I don’t see another exit other than the way we came in. The smell inside this place is rancid, wooden crates line the walls and a few barrels scattered across the floor, but no sign of my mom.

“Well, well, well. Look what the cat dragged in,” King mocks as Gabe steps into his view. I move to lean around him, but Gabe throws his arm out. “Oh, looky there. Two for the price of one. It must be my lucky day.” My stomach churns at the sound of his voice.

My eyes take a second scan of the open room for any sign of my mother, and that’s when I see her. A man, barely in sight, stands on the second-floor railing. I think I can see the top of my mom’s head or at least I think it's her. It has to be.

Suddenly my hand twitches to grab the gun tucked in my waist and shoot him in the face. but I know I have to be smarter than that.

I only count three men, King, the guy up top, and the one who led us into this room. That should be easy enough for us to deal with as long as no one else comes in. Who’s to say if the bullets start flying they won’t rush inside and kill us all.

Be smart, Angel.

Be patient.

Wait for the right time and take your shot.

“Enough with the games, King. You wanted Angel. She’s here,” Gabe spits, holding onto me tightly.

King laughs, and a chill runs down my spine. He’s mentally unstable. The more I think about it, the more I realize he should’ve been institutionalized a long ass time ago.

“Well, come on then. A deal is a deal, I guess.” He waves me over and Gabe shakes his head.

Gabriel sighs, running a hand over his face. “Do you think we’re idiots? Bring Brenda out first.”

King laughs a diabolical laugh that makes my skin crawl. “Honestly, it’s good to see you, Gabe. I’ve missed you,” he teases.

Don’t let him get under your skin, Gabe. That’s what he wants. He wants to see you squirm.

“Fuck off, King. And how many times have I told you.Don’t. Call. Me, Gabe.” Oh, shit. Please don’t let them get into a pissing contest. We can’t afford to make any mistakes. Just keep him talking until the others arrive. We need backup!

“Oh lighten up. I’m just happy you're on your feet again. I tried really hard not to hit any major arteries the last time we played together.”

I can feel the anger pouring off Gabe in waves. There’s no stopping it now. King’s hit a nerve.

“Bring my mom down! Let her walk out of here with Gabriel and I’m all yours, King! That’s what you wanted, right? To make the guys suffer. To make Royal suffer for turning his back on you for me,” I shout. “Well, I’m right here so what are you waiting for?”

I watch as the smile drops from King’s face.Yeah, you aren’t the only one that can fuck with someone’s head.

King whistles loudly and the guy upstairs pops his head over the balcony. “Bring her down,” King orders.

The air in my lungs gets trapped as the sound of rustling hits my ears.Oh please don’t put up a fight, Mom.

As soon as the two of them come into view, I see my mom struggling in his arms and shaking her head wildly.

“It’s okay, Mom,” I shout, and she starts to sob. Her shoulders sag as tears stream down her face. I can’t bear the sight of it.

I want to run to her and throw my arms around her, but I can’t.

The man holding her stops at the end of the stairs when gunshots start to ring out.
