Finally, some peace and fucking quiet.

No longer having to listen to him run his mouth is the highlight of my day. I shut my eyes, needing to regain my strength and energy before his next attack.

Time passes by in a dark, cloudy haze. There’s one small window in this room. It’s how I track how long I’ve been out each day. Some days are harder to keep track of than others. I’ll be tortured when the sun is out, and after I black out the sun is still shining through the glass.

King comes into the room, slamming the door behind him. “What was it about Sean that made you turn your back on me? Be honest. Were the two of you tag teaming Gloria? Come on, you can tell me. No judgment here,” he mocks.

“Still dwelling on the past, I see. Why is it so hard to believe he was just a better man than you? That’s why you killed him, right? Because you’re a jealous piece of shit who can’t cope with God giving you a micropenis,” I laugh. My voice is hoarse, but it seems to make the impact I was looking for as King steps forward, striking me hard across the face.

Pain shoots through my skull, causing me to see stars.

He sets ’em up and I knock ’em down. Getting under King’s skin is the only happiness I have to look forward to. Besides, he fails to understand that being alone in a room with King and unable to stick a knife through his throat is torture enough for me. No amount of physical pain’s worse than that.

Every day that King breathes air means I’ve failed Gloria and Sean.

I must’ve dozed off because the rumble of the blast has my eyes jerking open in surprise. Hope fills me when the gunshots start.

The cavalry has arrived. Payback’s a bitch King.

Chapter 18

Jaxon

We’reahalfmileaway from the warehouse that King has set up shop in. Trees and a wooded area surround it, so we need to do recon before moving in. Otherwise, we could be walking into a trap or ambush.

The truck comes to a stop. Sinner hops out, walking around to the back to set up his buddy’s surveillance drone. The guys and I jump out and follow him.

We stand by watching as the drone goes up in the air moving over the trees then the picture comes across Sinner’s computer screen. Sinner navigates the drone around the building while we point out any men we spot on the screen, counting out loud for everyone to hear. Cruz stands beside us, looking for any sign of checkpoints we may run into.

“Thirteen,” Lucky says, spotting another behind the tree line.

Shadow sneaks in from behind, smacking Lucky in the back of the head. “Have I taught you nothing, young blonde padawan? Fourteen, fifteen,” he says, pointing at the screen—two snipers crouch in the grassy area a few yards away from where Lucky just pointed.

Lucky’s shoulders sag in defeat. “Shit, I thought—” Lucky starts.

“That’s the problem. You should be using your eyes to look for signs of movement. Being able to spot an enemy in plain sight is easy, Luck.” Shadow cuts him off, tapping his finger against his temple.

“It’s about finding the ones who are hiding in the dark waiting to sneak up on you and take you out that you wanna be sure to find,” I say staring at the screen, my eyes wandering from left to right over each area coming into our view. “Sixteen, seventeen,” I blurt out, happy that the hours Lucky and I spent relentlessly working with Shadow and Sinner are now being put to good use.

Sinner claps me on the back in a proud way.

They were the youngest Navy Seals of their generation. Too bad things went sideways for them otherwise, they’d still be serving, and we’d be lost without them.

“Alright, we have at leastseventeen–” Cruz cocks his eyes to Lucky and me with a smirk on his face. Lucky and I stand up tall, feeling satisfied that we were able to help out more than just another gun. “—armed men between the front and the back. The Reapers will work on taking out the men in the front while the Sons take out the ones in the back,” Cruz explains, looking confident with his plan.

Sinner picks up where he left off. “Everyone knows their position. A few men from each club will hang back to take out any runners leaving the building. We need King alive, if possible.”

“No onetakes a shot before we’ve cleared the area. Sinner and Shadow will take out as many men with the help of their sniper friends. Zeke and I will be on coms throughout everything. We need to blow the doors at the same time. If we lose the element of surprise, this mission is a bust. Gabriel’s life will be in danger of losing his life, and King will take any opportunity he has to slip out from under us.” Cruz commands, sounding like a Lieutenant in the military right now.

I imagine this is the way he was when he was in the service. Oozing confidence and focused on the end game.

We check to make sure we have everything we need then head towards the warehouse. I pull my knife out from its holster strapped to my leg. It’s been too long since I’ve used this baby. But the weight of it feels good in the palm of my hand.

Everyone has their own choice of weapon. Luck and Royal prefer their Glocks, while I love ol’ Betty here.

Stabbing someone feels much more personal than shooting them, anyway. That probably stems from stabbing my father to death with a knife.

“Hey, eyes on the prize, Jax,” Royal says, looking at me with his brows cocked. It’s no secret that I love bloodshed more than the others. It’s the only outlet other than Angel that makes me feel whole.
