“She found the flash drive.” Ryzen’s voice was low, angry.

Riddick was quiet for a moment, his fingers rubbing his temples. “You were supposed to get rid of that. Why do you still have it?”

“Insurance against Voledetti. But she saw the security footage. She knows.”

“Why the fuck would you even save that? Are you trying to get us both locked up?”

“Don’t worry, I got it all back. I have a plan, Riddick.”

“Was her almost dying part of your plan? Fuck, Ryzen!”

“That was her fault. She tried to get away.” He smirked.

“What are you going to do when she remembers, Ryzen?” Riddick’s voice was laced with panic.

My ears perked up, confusion clouding my brain. Remember? Were they talking about me?

Ryzen chuckled and held up a bottle of liquid, shaking it. “She won’t. Believe me.”

Riddick shook his head. “This is fucking crazy. Things have gone from bad to worse, to just…fuck!”

Ryzen poured out two drinks, handing one to Riddick. “I’m taking care of it, like I always do.”

The knot in my stomach grew to the size of a boulder, and I backed away from the door slowly. What the hell was going on? Something wasn’t right, that much was clear. Why would the FBI be talking to them? And who the hell were this Blackwood and Voledetti? There were too many questions, but there was one thing I knew for sure.

My fiancé was hiding something.

And I wanted to know what it was.

Chapter Seventeen

Day 63

It had been over a week since I had overheard that strange conversation between Ryzen and Riddick. He hadn’t bothered sticking around and had been gone by breakfast the next morning. Iva too; she was nowhere to be seen. Not that I was complaining. Something was going on between the three of them, and I had a dreadful feeling that I was involved somehow.

Being on the island felt isolating. Ryzen spent most of his time locked in his office and would only stop by my room at night before bed. I wondered if this was what our relationship had always been like. The pictures he had shown me reflected a loving couple who were very much taken with each other, but there was a coldness about him that had me feeling uneasy at times.

The only other people I had contact with were Valik and the doctor, who barely uttered a few words every time I saw him. The good news was that the cast on my arm could come off in as soon as two weeks. I was getting stronger, moving around as much as I could. During the day, Valik would take me on walks around the property where I would try to get as much info out of him as possible. He answered almost all my questions, except the ones about Juliet. I would get random images of her smiling face in my head; they weren’t old memories, they were definitely recent, and I was excited about that. But Valik would stutter and try to change the subject when I asked about her. I wanted to trust him. Deep in my gut, I felt that he didn’t mean to cause me any harm. But he was hiding something. Just like Ryzen.

I had tried asking him more about my accident on his routine nightly visit where he would bring me tea and pain medication.

“I already told you, Nova. We had an argument over the wedding date, and you got upset and left. You had been drinking too much that night, and you slammed right into a tree.” His lips were set in a flat line. “I warned you about your drinking before. This is the wakeup call you needed.”

Great. I was apparently a drunk also.

“Now, take your pills.” He handed me two pills and a cup of tea.

I had tried telling him that I was feeling much better, that I didn’t think I needed them anymore. But he didn’t listen. Just said “doctors’ orders.” End of conversation.

I popped them in my mouth and sipped the tea. At his pointed look, I chugged the whole cup and handed it back to him empty.

“Get some rest. I love you.” He leaned down and kissed my forehead.

“Thanks,” I mumbled and lay down, shutting my eyes.

He turned off the lights, leaving me in the dark, and as soon as he shut the door behind him, I swiveled my tongue and spit out the two pills I had hidden there. I reached under the mattress and pulled out the baggie of pills I had been collecting over the past few days and added the new ones in there.

Stepford Wife Nova had apparently gotten herself up shit creek somehow. And I was going to have to fix it. First thing, no more damn pills. I was sick and tired of always being groggy and in a state of confusion. Sometimes it was hours before I could even have a rational thought. Second thing, I needed to find a phone.
