She shakes her head. “No,” she sighs. “I know what he did. I’m angry, so fucking furious. I knew he was in trouble but I hadn’t realized how bad it had gotten. He shouldn’t have done what he did to her and he’ll make it up to her. I promise you he will.”
I look at the woman I was once married to and realize just how tired she is. “She will never know about this,” I tell her, needing her to agree. “You love him, Tanya, you’re not going to divorce him over this.” She shakes her head. “So, Shelby will never know the truth.”
She frowns. “Why? She’d love you even more for doing this for her.”
I nod in agreement. “She would, but she’d hate him and then in turn you. She’d never want to be around him and he’s your husband.”
She sighs deeply. “How did things end up here?”
I shrug. “We were never meant for one another. Being with you led me to Shelby and me bringing you to all those functions led to you Jason.”
She smiles. “Yeah, I guess it worked out for the best. You’re a good man, Harlan, and I know that you’ll treat my daughter like a princess.”
Too fucking right I will. She’s mine and I’ll make sure that her life is the best that it can be. “Let’s go see her, she’s probably worried about what’s going on.”
“She shouldn’t be. The way you look at her is unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” she tells me as we exit the kitchen. “Now, sweetheart,” she says as she sits beside Shelby. “Tell me about the baby. Are you happy?”
Shelby glances at me, love shining brightly in her eyes. “I’m so happy, mom. I’ve never felt this way before.”
Looking at the woman I love and I know without a shadow of a doubt that everything I need is right here. She’s all I fucking want and nothing is ever going to change that.

Eight and a half months later, my wife gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Marisa.
