I set the sleeping bag on the bed. "You don’t have to worry about me. Go out there and enjoy your time with them."

He looked towards the door and acted as though he suddenly remembered something. "The serum."

"What about it?"

"You said I need another dose."

"We have a few week before the full regimen needs to be completed." Before I left the Mission Flyer on Treoid 5, I was optimistic in thinking we’d reach a space hub and get to HQ in time. I had no clue how I was going to be hundreds of thousands of miles away from the nearest familiar lab. I hoped I could get a communication to HQ soon.

"If you can’t get the serum, then I need to use my time fast to help my people."

I paused temporarily from making myself a comfy nest. "Don’t think like that. I'll make sure you get all of the serum." Although I understood why his mood changed, I didn’t have to like it. He seemed happy to see Lerun and the Racopians who were loyal to him. Now the thought of us racing against time and not being able to get him the final dose of the serum before it was too late, made my chest tight.

I couldn’t let him go feral to bloodthirst. Varus was under my watch.

I couldn’t lose him.

The fierceness of the thought left me shaken. I looked up and realized Varus had slipped out.

I took a deep breath before I went and pulled the door closed. Then I removed my jacket and boots to go to sleep. Fatigue seeped into my bones. Combined with a full stomach, I was no match for the two. Within minutes, I could hear the sounds outside the cavern grow dimmer. The Racopians celebratory laughter and muffled chatter carried me to sleep.

Chapter Nine

VARUS

Ileft Harper so shecould rest. It was calm in the cavern. I knew she’d have little trouble falling asleep there. After all she did to help me and get us here, she deserved to take a break.

I returned to the celebration outside. The campfire burned bright and strong as drinks were passed around. I spoke to the familiar faces of those who used to reside in the Mountain Citadel with me. Isath put them in exile once he got rid of me. My anger flared towards him more as I viewed the children and elderly he forced from their homes. He would pay soon.

Lerun still sat at the table, drinking from his cup. His body faced the direction of a musician nearby who strummed a tune on an erutar. Lerun turned my way before I had a chance to sit down. His senses were sharper than many of my soldiers.

"How is your companion?"

I liked the way he referred to Harper. My companion. "Resting."

"The wingless ones tire easily."
