Chapter Three

CAMMIE

Imay not have let on like Rone did, but three weeks of no “strenuous activity” had its effect on me, too. I already dealt with him being away on a mission in the field for a month. A total of seven weeks would make things strained during the interplanetary tour.

It took us several days as the Wanderstar Fleet ship made its leisurely way through the galaxy. We stopped at a moon base to visit soldiers at a surveillance post. We stayed there for a week before we made our way to planet Racopia, the farthest planet in the solar system. It was home to winged Javorians and their ruler, King Varus.

There, we attended his coronation and that of his mate, Harper, a human woman and former enlisted soldier of the fleet. It was nice to talk to another person from my home planet. Now she was a queen of this one.

Humans, particularly women, were moving on up in the universe. It made me happy to be part of a group of people who were paving the way for future generations to have goodwill with those in the Arcturus Galaxy.

Future generations. That thought stuck with me throughout the time Rone and I stayed in Racopia and once we left after giving our well wishes to Varus and Harper. I reclined on a chair in the commander’s private quarters of the ship as we traveledto our next destination. I needed to check to see the next stop on this tour.

We all did important work to limit the influence and power of Quarek renegades in the galaxies, yet life wasn’t all about military strategies and winning wars. There were other ways to leave lasting legacies.

My mind wandered to a conversation Rone and I had when he returned from the field mission on Xaxos. He asked me what I thought about kids. The question seemed to come out of nowhere.

I heard footsteps behind me and turned to see Rone step through the door. I was so focused on my thoughts I didn’t hear it slide open.

“Busy thinking of speeches for the upcoming moon base ceremony?” he asked before giving me a kiss.

“I have to give a speech?”

“You don’t have to, but the troops would like to hear from you.”

I turned my chair away from the wide window that gave us a vast view of space as we traveled. “I’ll get to work on it. How many moon bases have we been to now?”

“I lost count.”

I took out my laptop. “Maybe I need to just see how many moons are in this galaxy and go from there. What are you up to?”

“I’m taking a break from surveying the new recruits while they map out other spaceships' coordinates. They need to master this skill if they want to do more than just goodwill tours.”

“Just another day in the busy life of an overlord.”

He watched me open my laptop. “I’m not too busy at the moment.”

I laughed when I caught his drift. I didn’t let on how my body got a buzz when I thought about us being together. “You know what I’m going to say. Has it been a full month yet?”

“You and that medic have teamed up to slowly torture me.”

“This is the first time I heard you be so dramatic.” I shut the laptop, not in the mood to prepare a speech. If I couldn’t make love to Rone, I could at least enjoy teasing him. “I don't like it, either, but you have to follow the doctor’s orders.”

“You know what I think about those so-called orders.”

“We probably shouldn’t gripe about them. Some soldiers are deployed for months or years. We can wait another few days.”

Rone made me think twice as he made swirling motions on the back of my neck. “Deployments and doctor’s orders are two different things.”

“Both require patience. Besides, I want to enjoy my time with you, not fit it in between writing a speech and you surveying new recruits.”

He grumbled before he nipped my ear in begrudging acceptance. “You did not feel this way when we were waiting for the ship to refuel on Procyon.”

“You didn’t have a broken rib at the space hub. Heal first, find me another pretty desert, and maybe then we’ll revisit this conversation.”

“I find it oddly alluring when you talk like we’re at a negotiation table. I could almost forget this is just another form of your torture.”
