“They don’t get pointy until the child is around four or five.”

If my reassurances were a renegade ship, she would have shot it down. “The horns on Gofrin’s two-year-old looked pretty spiky to me.”

Bhesur lowered the diagnostic tool on a nearby stand and shut it off. “Ambassador, if I may give my medical opinion, you and the commander might want to wait until you learn the sex of the baby before you concern yourself with horns. It may not have them.”

“That’s reasonable.” I gave the medic a nod of appreciation.

My mate sat up on the table. “How far along am I?”

“Twelve weeks.”

“Three months.” She nodded. “That image showed a big baby. Six more months to go, then.”

“No,” the medic and I said in unison.

“No?” she echoed us. “You’re both confusing me.”

I helped her off the table. “Zol babies don’t take nine months to develop like humans.”

“How long do they take?”

“Six.”

She leaned against the table as though a strong gust of wind sent her back. The medic stood by waiting to catch her if I let go.

“Six months, you said.” She took in a long breath and stood upright.

Both the medic and I exchanged glances. I wasn’t going to let go of her hand until she was safely back upstairs and in bed. Even then, I might hold onto it in case she rolled over in her sleep if the surprise caught up with her.

Cammie pressed her lips together as she sometimes did while deep in thought. “That means I’m already halfway through the pregnancy. No wonder I was so nauseous back on Elyse Island.”

Bhesur nodded. “That’s usually a good sign things are in working order.”

I then remembered how long we’d been touring the solar system. “If we’re done here, Cammie and I are going to quarters. It’s been a long trip. We’ll make an announcement later.”

The medic understood. “Of course. Everything is confidential. I would recommend another scan in a month to monitor development.”

“See you next month, doctor.” Cammie headed towards the exit.

On the way back up to our quarters, we stopped at a vending machine to get her a can of that fizzy pink drink she mentioned. She sipped it during the elevator ride up and as we walked into the living space. I had to speak as soon as we were alone.

“Cammie, I know tonight was a lot to take in at the clinic, but we’re mates, and soon we’ll be a family. I love you and the child growing inside you. It’s going to be alright.”

She put down the carbonated beverage. “I got intimidated by the idea of horns. Other than that, I’m happy about the baby.”

“So am I.”

“I’m surprised by all this. Yet isn’t everyone who gets pregnant for the first time?” Cammie smiled with a shrug. “Guess I'd better rest tonight since I'm about to head into my third trimester. Love you.”

I looked at Cammie and recalled the image of our baby on the scanner. This child was the physical manifestation of our bond, our love. I knew then I would give worlds for these two.

CAMMIE

Rone and the medic told the truth. Zol babies did grow fast. Those pregnancy books from Earth did little to prepare me for what to expect while carrying his child.

Within another month, I sprouted a bump. Goodbye fitted clothes. Hello, comfy elastic waist pants and maxi dresses.

Once the bump was front and center, all corners of the galaxy soon learned I was carrying the overlord’s baby. Not that I minded at that point. I was proud to be a future parent, and happy to share this journey with my mate. No matter how much I tried, I couldn’t stop putting my hand on my belly and feeling the baby’s gentle flutters of movement.
