We didn’t talk about possibly having children. There never seemed to be a moment to open the subject. Obviously, she liked them. But could we be parents?

“You guys are back.” Her voice brought me out of my thoughts. Cammie took one perplexed look at my appearance. “Why are you covered in sand?”

I still felt the granules in my scalp. “It’s a long story.”

Gofrin shook his head. “It’s not long at all. It was actually only one minute and eight seconds, involving a race and a tail pipe that misfired later.”

Cammie handed the toddler back to Jeleen. “What were you doing racing?”

“He had to show that he could beat me. Bah. Beginner’s luck.” Gofrin left us with a dismissive wave before heading into the house after his wife and child.

I headed for the guest house. “I’ll join you for breakfast after I get the sand out of my shoes.”

She dusted the front of my clothes. “And your shirt. And your horns.”

“If you keep touching me, we’re going to make use of the mat in the guest house again before we leave.”

She looked past me with a telltale smile. “Can you get your mind out of low places for a moment and tell me what’s the next stop on our trip?”

“We have one more round to make on Xaxos before we go home. It’s another sandbox, but this one will have an ocean in front of it.”

“We’re going to a beach? That sounds like too much fun to be official.”

“It’s Elyse Island. You remember meeting Admiral Siru when you first came to Xaxos.”

She recalled the information. “Blue aquatic Javorian, very serious. Not too keen on the alliance between Earth and the Fleet.”

“All that has changed. He has a human mate now, too.”

“Aren’t we just too irresistible?”

Cammie was. I knew that, at least. She was my weakness and my strength. As I went to the guest house to clean up, the image of her holding the child stayed with me.

Chapter Six

CAMMIE

We ate breakfast with Gofrin and his family before it was time for us to get on the spaceship and head out. I didn’t eat much of the food. I guess my tastebuds were off. Either that or my digestive system was experiencing some weird intergalactic gastric overload from the variety of foods I ate all month.

I said goodbye to my in-laws, making a note to send gifts to their kids. The toddler Eleko was adorable with his sleepy face and fuzzy little horns. He always wanted to be held, and according to his mother, still loved to nap for hours.
