“Kids?” I laugh. “We just moved into this place. Slow your roll, buddy.”

“What? The future is bright,” he says in response, not sharing my humor. “It’s foreseeable now.”

I squeeze his thigh, understanding his true meaning. He’s finally free.

“Yeah, maybe. Or maybe not. We’ll see as time goes on,” I say.

“Seriously? I’m finally ready to nail things down and talk, and you just want to see?”

I laugh again. “I guess the stars haven’t aligned for us quite yet.”

He’s about to respond when a loud pop sounds in the distance. We face the water, met with fireworks exploding into the sky.

“People can never wait,” he murmurs. “They have to start early.”

“I don’t know, I kind of like it,” I reply, watching the sky light up with gold, purple, and red. “They’re so excited, they can’t help themselves.”

He shrugs and we watch as more fireworks explode into the sky.

“In the darkness, seek the stars. You may not see them, but they are always there for you,” he whispers suddenly.

My breath hitches. “That’s… beautiful.”

“My mom always said that to me when I was little.”

My eyes water from the overwhelming sentiment. “That’s so sweet.”

“She was wrong, though.”

I peer at him curiously, but his gaze remains on the sky, fireworks reflected in his eyes. “It wasn’t the stars.”

He faces me, his eyes filled with my favorite twinkle.

“It was the moon.”
