“He asked about her when you took me to the hospital.”

Cody had forgotten that; he’d been so focused on Summer. “You were in so much pain. How did you remember?”

“When I see someone who so obviously likes someone else and it’s genuine, I kind of feel...”

“What?”

“Envious.”

He put his arm around her and drew her close. “Oh, sweetheart, lots of people care about you. Especially me.”

“I know.” She pressed her head into his shoulder, then they kept walking through the thickening crowd to the bar. “Anyway, you two seemed so close. It felt to me like you missed hanging out with him. You both have busy schedules. So I thought why not get him a ticket, have him join us here, and see what happens.”

“I don’t know if Brooke is ready.”

“Sometimes all you need is someone to tell you you are.”

“Is that what happened with us after I wouldn’t let you dismiss me?”

“You made it so I couldn’t stop thinking about you, so I opened the door to possibility.”

“After what Brooke’s been through, losing her husband... I want her to find the kind of happiness she had with him.”

“Even if it’s with your best friend?”

“I don’t think you pick the one you fall for, so much as it just happens because it’s meant to be.”

Summer raised a brow and smiled. “That’s very romantic.”

“You don’t believe that?”

“Actually, I do. I’ve seen my mother try to force it. That never works. But I also believe you have to nurture that chemistry and the relationship. It doesn’t just grow on its own.”

“It’s like the big bang. You meet someone, sparks fly, and there’s a pull that brings you together. Then it’s all about creating the universe of your relationship together.”

“Yes.” She turned into him, her hands on his arms. “I am definitely drawn to you. Now, we’re working on pulling things together so we stay together.”

He kissed her softly right there in the middle of the hotel ballroom.

Brooke and David caught up to them.

“Do they do this a lot?” David asked.

“Not enough, if you ask me,” Brooke replied. “You never know when you’ll lose the one you love, so you should kiss him all you want now.”

Summer nodded. “Don’t mind if I do.” She kissed him again.

It took Cody just a split second to switch from feeling incredibly sad for his sister to falling into the kiss Summer laid on him, a kiss that made him want to drag her home and into bed.

“Let’s get a drink, David. You can catch me up and tell me how you went from cute geeky resident to hot doctor.”

“Oh, that’s easy. Instead of four hours of sleep a night, I get six. And I was always hot; you just had your gaze in a different direction.”

“Well, tonight I’m looking at you.” Brooke’s words drifted off as they walked away.

Cody held Summer close, the two of them staring after David and Brooke. “What just happened?”

“Your sister decided she doesn’t want to be alone anymore.”
