“Me,” Brooke interrupted her brother, walking into the foyer. “Alex is all set up with the sitter. Looks like we’re ready to go.”

Nate waved his hand toward the door. “Let’s go.”

Haley walked out first, followed by her parents.

Natalie hung back and waited for Summer and Cody. “Can I hitch a ride with you?” she asked him.

“Not tonight,” Cody said. “We’re taking my car. Only room for two.”

“What about Brooke?” Natalie asked.

“I’m going with you in Miranda’s Escalade.” Brooke hooked her arm through Natalie’s. “Shall we?”

Cody took Summer’s hand and held her back. He didn’t say anything until Natalie and Brooke were out of earshot. “About tonight...”

She looked up at him. “Yes,” she prompted.

“I can’t wait to go to this thing with you, but later... I booked us a room at a hotel down the street from the event.”

“Perfect.” She couldn’t contain her excitement or smile.

He exhaled a heavy breath. “Are you sure?”

“That I want to be alone with you, away from everyone and everything, and feel you touch me, and wake up with you? Yeah. I’m more than sure.” She couldn’t wait.

“Good. Me too. And I’m glad you’re okay with a hotel this time, because I want it to be just us. You know?”

“I do.”

Her dad honked once to let them know he was leaving, then drove away.

She and Cody were still standing in the open front door.

He slipped his hand up the side of her neck. “I wanted to do something special for you.”

She grinned. “I’m looking forward to it.”

His eyes blazed with heat and he kissed her softly. “It’s going to be the perfect night.”

Chapter Thirty-Four

Cody walked into the benefit with Summer’s hand in his, feeling like the luckiest man alive. While he anticipated the night ahead, he tried to stay in the here and now and enjoy this time with her, the family, friends, and acquaintances seeing them together as a couple.

It had been a long time since he’d wanted to be linked to someone like this.

He wanted everyone in the room to know Summer was with him.

Thoughts of what happened with Amy circled his mind. He remembered how everyone treated him after he caught her cheating. They felt sorry for him. They said good riddance. At the time, and maybe still, he felt like he’d been played as a chump.

Summer would never do that to him.

Their relationship was just getting to the good stuff.

“Cody, what’s wrong?” Summer slipped her hand free of his and stepped back.

He quickly took her hand again and stepped into her. “Nothing is wrong. I’m with you.”

She studied his face.
