Haley didn’t need to ogle them again to know what was going on. Her cheeks flushed just thinking about the kissing. “They’re adults. They’re seeing each other. Cody hasn’t been with anyone in a long time.”

“Amy crushed his heart. Summer is about to do the same.”

Haley shook her head. “No, she’s not. She likes him.”

“That doesn’t change the fact that she’s leaving in a month.”

“That doesn’t mean they won’t stay together.”

“It will end.” Natalie seemed so sure.

“Maybe he’ll move to be with her,” Haley shot back, not liking how Natalie made everything seem dire.

Natalie gasped. “That is not going to happen.”

Haley held her hands out. “Well, she can’t run a billion-dollar business from here when the company is based in Texas.”

“What about Cody’s work? Is he just supposed to give it up for her?”

“Maybe. If that’s what he wants.” Haley shrugged. “I don’t know. They’ll figure it out.”

“That’s the thing, dummy, there is no working it out when they live in different states. They’ll try for a while, then it will implode. Cody will be devastated again. Better they let this thing go now, rather than drag it out.”

Haley quickly glanced at the couple. Summer held on to Cody like she never wanted to let him go. Cody kissed her like he didn’t want to ever stop. Seeing the two locked together like that, it was clear they wanted to be together.

Haley looked away, feeling like a creeper spying on them. “It’s none of our business. They obviously want to try, so let them. Summer will be back to visit Dad and us and be with Cody as often as she can.”

“He needs someone who will be here for him always. What if Summer meets someone new there and Cody doesn’t know about it?”

“She’s not like that,” Haley defended Summer.

“How do you know?”

“Because she’s nice. She cares about him. And us.” Haley held her hands up. “She wants to spend more time here.” Her hands dropped, like that was the end of the story.

“Uh-huh. Until she doesn’t, because she’s too busy.”

Haley shook her head. “Why do you always have to be so negative about everything?”

Natalie’s head snapped back and she got all defensive. “I’m not.”

“Yes. You are. Nothing is ever good enough. Cody likes her. Maybe he even loves her.”

Natalie cringed. “No, he doesn’t.”

“How do you know?”

Disbelief filled Natalie’s eyes. “It’s been like two weeks.”

“I saw it the second he got out of the car that first day with her. He couldn’t take his eyes off her. He hasn’t since she got here. The first thing he does when he gets up in the morning is look for her. Same when he gets home each night. I overheard them talking earlier. He wants more with her.”

“He said that?” Natalie paled.

“Yes.”

Cody suddenly broke the kiss, planted his hands on the glass, and stared down at Summer, his chest moving like he was breathing hard. They shared some words and a long look, then separated and walked down the hall toward the stairs.

Cody brushed his hand over Summer’s hair, said something that made her smile, then he went up and she went to her room.
