Summer stood. “Your uncle needs a shower. But I’ll take you.” She glanced at Cody. “If that’s all right.”

“Of course it is. I’ll meet you down there in twenty minutes.”

Summer held her hand out to Alex. “I bet we can build a huge sandcastle before he gets there.” She walked out of the office with Alex.

Cody followed behind them. “His pails and shovels are on the back patio.”

“Don’t forget to tell Brooke he’s with me.”

Cody touched her arm to get her to stop. “I will. But first...” He cupped her face and kissed her softly. “Good morning.”

“Good morning.” She managed to say it back even though he’d completely scrambled her brain with that sweet kiss that packed a punch of lust.

Cody grinned, then headed upstairs.

Alex looked up at her. “Are you his girlfriend now?”

She didn’t know how to answer that. At what point did that become true?

“We like each other a lot.” She thought about it some more. “I’d like to be his girlfriend,” she admitted.

“They barely know each other,” Natalie said, coming up behind them in the living room.

Summer turned to her. “You’re back.”

Natalie gave her aduhlook. “Brooke texted and asked if I’d take Alex down to the beach.”

“Great. We’ll all go together.”

“If you’ve got him...” Natalie backed up a step.

“I do. And Cody will be joining us shortly.”

Natalie started moving forward again. “Well, let’s go get set up.”

Summer let Natalie take the lead and shook her head.

Maybe Cody was the way in to getting to know her sister better and spending more time with her.

Chapter Twenty-Six

Summer laughed when Alex put his hands up like claws, roared, and stomped the sandcastle Natalie had just finished making with him.

“Hey,” Natalie grumbled. “It took forever to get that second story to stay up.” Suddenly Natalie’s frown turned upside down. The brilliant smile could mean only one thing. “You made it.”

Summer turned to smile at Cody as he made his way across the sand to them. She put her hand to her forehead to keep the sun out of her eyes, which gave her a great view of him in a simple heather gray tee and black shorts, bare feet, and a sweet smile for her.

Cody dropped down beside her, leaned in, and kissed her cheek.

“See. Girlfriend,” Alex announced.

Natalie went quiet.

Cody took it in stride without comment. “I thought we were building castles, not destroying them.”

“I bet I can build a bigger one than you,” Natalie challenged him.

“You’re on.”
