“What’s your pain level now?”

“One. But that’s just some pressure behind my eye.”

“Okay. If this flares back up, you let me know. I also want you to follow up with your physician and fill the prescription I called into the pharmacy Cody uses.”

“We’ll stop and grab it on the way home,” Cody assured her.

The doctor patted her leg. “The nurse will remove the monitors and you’re free to go home.”

“Thank you.” Summer gave the doctor a smile.

He left them in a rush, probably to attend to another patient.

She sat up and started pulling the wires off her chest beneath the open-backed gown.

Cody stood. “I’ll be back in a minute. I just want to thank David again for getting you in so fast.”

“Thank him again for me, too.”

Cody leaned down and kissed her on the forehead. “Back in a sec.”

She looked at her upset father. “Natalie and I will work things out. It hasn’t even been a week. She’s still getting used to the idea that I’m her sister and I’m not going anywhere.”

Her dad’s mouth drew into a tight line. He didn’t say anything.

Miranda did. “Thank you for understanding this is difficult for Natalie. While she was wrong in what she did, and I will speak to her about it, she’s usually not like this. I’ve never known her to be mean.”

For a split second, Summer caught the disbelief in her dad’s eyes at that statement.

Summer didn’t blame Miranda for seeing the best in her child. She wished her own mother could do the same for her.

“As I said, I’m fine now. Let’s just drop it.”

“Natalie will apologize for what she’s done,” her father announced.

“Why don’t you give her a chance to do that on her own, once she sees that the situation was more dire than she thought.”When she blew me off, Summer wanted to add, but refrained in hopes of keeping things civil and not upsetting her dad more. “After all, I got much worse after I saw her.” That was true, though she’d have fared much better if she’d gotten to the hospital sooner.

Cody walked back in with the nurse, who gathered the discarded stickers that had held the monitors on her chest and handed Summer her shirt and discharge papers.

Summer sat forward and had to take a second because her headspun from the pain meds. “I’m good,” she assured all of them, especially Cody, who reached to steady her.

Cody held her arm. “I’ll help you change.”

“We’ll wait outside the curtain.” Miranda pulled Nate out to the other side.

Cody drew the gown off her arms and she put her shirt on, not making a big deal about him seeing her half naked.

“My car is right out front.” Cody held her arm as she scooted off the bed and stood on her own.

“I’m fine.”

Cody pulled the curtain aside. “I’ll drive her home.”

“We’ll be right behind you.” Her dad went ahead with Miranda.

It only took a couple of minutes to get settled in Cody’s car.

She took his hand and squeezed it. “Cody, look at me.”
