Miranda put her hand on Haley’s shoulder. “You’re right. We should do it again. Maybe on Friday.”

Summer frowned. “Oh. Um. Cody and I are going out to dinner that night.”

“What?” Natalie asked from behind them.

Summer met Natalie’s furious gaze. “Cody asked me to dinner.”

“You’re going to eat together here, I don’t see why you need to go out to do it.”

“Natalie, that’s none of your business,” Miranda said.

Natalie walked away, a disgruntled look on her face.

Haley shrugged. “I think it’s nice he likes you.”

Summer side-hugged her. “Thank you.”

They all walked out of her room and down the hallway toward the stairs with Haley in the lead.

“I’m worried about Natalie,” Miranda said to Summer.

“I’m sorry she’s upset.”

“She’s like every teen. She wants to be older than she is. And she thinks she knows everything.”

“Still, as a mom, you’ve got to be worried that my presence here has upset her.”

“That’s not your fault. I hope she comes to that conclusion soon, because Nate is so happy to have you in his life. Given a little time, I hope we all come together as family.”

Haley hit the bottom of the stairs and spotted Cody and Natalie standing close, Cody’s hands on her cheeks as he looked into Natalie’s eyes.

Summer stopped behind her.

Miranda kept walking toward Cody. “Everything okay?”

Cody turned Natalie’s head a little to the right. “I don’t see anything. I think you got it.” He released Natalie and spoke to her mom. “Nat had something in her eye, but I think it’s out.” He shrugged and looked past Miranda at Summer. “How was your day?”

Summer smiled at him. “Dad and I had a great lunch. Haley and I danced our butts off. I’m going to help her set the table.”

“I’ll help, too.” Cody looked at Miranda. “Whatever you cooked smells amazing.”

Natalie spun around and headed for the kitchen.

They all watched her go.

Mom sighed. “Come on. I made my famous enchiladas and Spanish rice.”

“Dad’s favorite,” Haley said, taking Summer’s arm and pulling her to come along.

She did and gave Cody another smile as they passed him.

Haley glanced back and caught the happiness in his eyes when he looked at Summer. She hoped they got together. It would be so cool if her sister married Cody. Then he’d really be their brother by marriage, not just because they were a family joined by a close friendship.

Haley really liked Summer. She wanted her to stay. What better way to get her to stay than for her to be with Cody.

If only Natalie would stay out of it and stop being such a b—brat.
