“Nice, but also complicated.”

Summer nodded though Lucy couldn’t see her. “Yeah. He lives here, too.”

“Like in the same house?”

“It’s a huge house. He and his sister live on one side, Nate and his family on the other.” She filled Lucy in on Cody’s father and how Nate took them in.

“That’s tough. And let me guess, he’s gorgeous but also nice. He’d have to be a good guy for you to like him.”

Summer grinned. “Think Chris Hemsworth but more serious.”

“Gah. You know that man is my kryptonite.”

Summer chuckled, because, yes, she knew that, but it didn’t make the description any less true. “Cody’s... thoughtful. Honest. Like he actually says what he means.”

“Oh, I like that.”

“Me too. I’ve never been so physically attracted to someone. It’s like I feel him when he’s near.”

“I am loving this for you.” Lucy sounded positively giddy.

“I don’t know how to do this.” It had been a long time since Summer had dated anyone seriously.

“Just go with your gut. And for god’s sake, give in to temptation. You have been all work, all the time. Have some fun. Open yourself to the possibility of it all.”

That was good advice for getting to know Cody and her family. “I will.”

“And, Summer...”

“Yeah?”

“You deserve good things to happen to you.”

“Thank you, Lucy. Right back at you.”

“I’m your best friend. I want you to be happy.”

“You’re my best friend. I want nothing but good times, good wine, and good love in your life, too.”

“You know me so well.” Amusement filled Lucy’s voice, because those were the three things Lucy loved most in life.

“I love you, Luc.”

“Love you back, babe.”

Summer ended the call, held the phone to her chest, and smiled, feeling lighter and ready to dive into getting to know her family better tomorrow.

Chapter Twelve

Summer didn’t sleep well. Her headache dissipated, but still she tossed and turned and tried to ignore all the thoughts circling her head that wouldn’t quiet. She woke up early, put on her running clothes, and headed outside.

The morning was cold and gray, the fog misting the air and making it difficult to see out past the pool to the beautiful coast beyond, but she loved it. She liked everything about being here. Especially, as Lucy said, the possibilities this change could bring into her life.

She had pulled out her phone to play her favorite playlist when it rang.

She thought about ignoring her mother again, but decided to get this over with now so she could run off her mad later. No doubt she’d need a few miles, or ten, maybe a hundred, to release the tension from this call.

She tapped the screen but waited for the initial blast of words before she put it to her ear.
