Hormones. They were making her crazy. The headache building behind her eye didn’t help her think straight, either. She needed to stop ruminating on the gorgeous man, who saw too much, knew her too well, and made her think and wish for things she didn’t think she’d ever have in her life, before he stole her abused heart.

She hoped her brain would start firing on all cylinders sometime before she reached California and her father’s home. There, she could focus on family and not the unexpected draw of the man who’d somehow shown her in just a short time that he actually saw her.

She didn’t exactly know what to do with him, but she liked having him around.

Maybe too much.

Because he was dangerous to her poor heart. Even though she knew it, she didn’t think she could resist him.

Chapter Six

Between boarding the plane and landing, Cody knew a couple of new things about Summer: She’d been on private planes before, but didn’t take it for granted. She was polite, never snooty. She didn’t expect others to do things for her. And she had a massive headache and never complained about it.

He slipped into his car beside her outside the hangar where the plane now sat parked. “Are you okay?”

She gave him one of those smiles she didn’t really mean. “I’m fine. Just a headache.” She clasped her hands in her lap.

“You’re nervous.” It didn’t take a genius to figure that out.

“How long until we get there?”

“Depending on traffic, maybe half an hour at the most. I texted Nate to let him know we’re on our way. He can’t wait.”

“I can’t believe this is happening.” She’d been quiet for most of the flight, though he did give her a quick overview of the family. The rest of the time, he’d given her the time and space she needed to settle into this new reality. He’d mostly worked, answering emails on his phone. “Just take it one step at a time, one day at a time. If you get overwhelmed, we’ll go out and do something, just the two of us.”

“How do you think my dad will feel about that?”

“I’m more interested in knowing howyoufeel about it.”

“Nervous,” she admitted.

“At least you’re honest.” He started the car. “I am, too. Nervous, that is.” He caught the soft blush on her cheeks and barely there grin and knew she was feeling something happening between them just like he did. He drove away from the hangar and onto the main road.

“Nice car.” Amusement rang in her voice. She checked out the sleek dashboard and chrome controls.

“I knew you’d like it the second I got into yours.” He grinned at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me you had the same exact Porsche as me?”

“I wanted to see the look on your face when you saw my car.” He glanced over at her. “The smile on your face was worth waiting for.” He reluctantly turned back to the road.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Anything,” he encouraged her, meaning it.

“You’re a successful lawyer, business owner, you’re rich, handsome—”

“Starting a file on me?” he teased.

“No.”

“That’s a list,” he pointed out. “What’s the question?”

“Women, and not just the ones who want something, find you immensely appealing.”

“Immensely?” He couldn’t help but grin at her again. “Still not a question.”

“Why haven’t you tried again with someone? There must have been dozens of nice women you’ve dated.”
