But the reality was that their relationship wouldn’t go the way he thought and they would spend time apart. Maybe it would be a good thing.

Not if he felt the way he did right now, missing her, wondering what she was doing and why he hadn’t heard from her at all.

“Cody,” Brooke prompted him to tell her what was going on.

Natalie squeezed his forearm. “I’ll see you at dinner.”

Brooke stepped up to him as Natalie walked away. “What’s going on with you two?”

“Nothing.” Cody reached for Alex, picked him up, and held him close. “How was your day, little man?”

“Good. I fed crickets to the class lizard. Mom said I could sign up to bring him home for a weekend.”

“I can’t wait to meet him.”

Brooke leaned up and kissed Alex’s cheek. “Be good. Go to bed on time.”

Alex bobbed his head. “I will.”

Cody set Alex back on his feet. “Head on over for dinner. I’ll be there in a minute. I just want to change clothes.”

Alex ran off.

His sister stayed put. “Do you miss her?”

“Yes.”

“That’s a good sign.”

“Why?”

“Since Amy, you haven’t cared if someone had other plans and couldn’t see you. You weren’t waiting for a call or text, hoping to hear from them. I know what it’s like to miss the person you love. Maybe this is the first time since Mom left and Dad died that you’re really feeling it. But she’ll be back tomorrow. She can’t stay away from you because she loves you.”

Hearing that made his heart jump in his chest. “How do you know that?”

“Because everything she’s done since she got here is to show you that she does. She’s arranging her life to be with you. Yes, sometimes things will pull you in opposite directions, but what you share will always bring you back together.”

He liked the sound of that. It felt very much that way. But... “I haven’t heard from her all day.”

“Did you call her?”

“No. I figured she was busy.”

Brooke gave him a look.

He was being ridiculous. “I’ll call her.”

She poked him in the chest. “Don’t let the little things trip you up and tie you in knots.”

“I don’t want her to feel like I can’t go a day without her.”

“I think she’d be really happy to know you can’t.”

He wrapped her in a hug. “Have fun tonight.”

“Oh, I will. You’ll have to save the sexting for after Alex goes to bed.”

He released her with a soft push to get her to go. “Leave before I pretend to be sick and you have to stay home.”
