“Sleep well, girls,” their mom called out as she and their dad headed down the hall.

Haley went into her room and closed the door.

Natalie went to her room and right to the windows that overlooked the pool and looked into Cody’s room across the way. She stared through the darkness to his empty bed and wondered where they had gone.

When would they be back? What were they doing?

Well, she didn’t have to think too hard about that one. Her heart sank. A tear slipped down her cheek. All she could do was imagine them alone in a room.

Together.

In bed.

She wondered if he’d leave with Summer and if she’d lost him.

Chapter Thirty-Seven

Summer gasped in surprise when she walked into the beautiful hotel suite to a fire blazing in the hearth, candles lit on the nightstands, rose petals strewn across the bed, a bottle of wine chilling in an ice bucket, and with a lovely charcuterie board with grapes, strawberries, kiwi, and chocolates sitting on the dresser. “Cody, this is really beautiful.”

Cody turned to her. “I wanted a place that felt like it could be ours.” He’d put a lot of thought into picking the right hotel.

He pulled the wine bottle from the ice bucket, checked out the label, and held it up. “Want some?”

She shook her head and pulled off one heel, dropping it next to her on the floor. “There’s only one thing I want.” She took off her other shoe, discarding it like the other.

“I want to take off that dress. Slowly.” Cody hooked his fingers in his tie, pulled it loose, then up and over his head. He tossed it on the upholstered bench at the end of the bed.

She grinned, unable to take her eyes off him.

He shucked off his jacket and tossed it over the tie. He toed off his shoes next, then pulled his dress shirt free of his pants and undid the cuffs. “I don’t plan on leaving this room until I know every single place on your body that makes you hum.”

Oh, she was already revved up and anxious to get her hands on him.

Cody pulled his wallet from his back pocket, held up a couple of condoms, then tossed them on the bed near the plump pillows. His wallet landed on his jacket.

She took a step toward him. “You should know, I appreciate the protection, but I also have an IUD.”

He gave her a firm nod. “Anything else you want me to know?”

She appreciated that he not only asked but waited patiently for her answer. “I haven’t done this in a while, but that doesn’t mean I want you to hold back.”

“I have every intention of letting go with you, and making sure you feel you can do the same.”

“I really want to see you take that shirt off.”

He obliged, not by unbuttoning it, but by pulling the thing over his head, off his arms, and tossing it. Muscles rippled as he moved. His arms, chest, and stomach were all sculpted to perfection and tanned by the sun.

She went on impulse, closing the distance between them, sliding her hands up his abdomen, over his pecs, and back down again, all that smooth, warm skin against hers. “Cody,” she said without taking her eyes off her hands moving over him.

“Yeah.”

“I’m overdressed now.”

That’s all it took to unleash him. He came at her with purpose and hunger in his eyes. Her dress didn’t stand a chance. Zipper down, he simply pushed it off her shoulders to puddle on the floor, forgotten. He paused for one brief moment, his gaze enthralled by her curves encased in nothing but scraps of barely there cranberry-colored lace.

His upper body dipped low as he scooped her up with his hands on the backs of her thighs. Her feet left the floor and her breasts pressed to his chest. His hungry mouth took hers in a searing kiss.

She wrapped her arms around his neck and held on as he took the few steps to the bed and laid her out on the cool sheets. His golden hair glinted in the firelight dancing against the walls. His body pressed down on hers, the warmth of his skin meeting her hard-tipped breasts. His mouth took hers in another scorching kiss as her thighs cradled his hips between her legs.
