When she was done chewing. “Don’t look at me like that, I’m starving.”

“Good,” I smirked back. “It’s nice to see you eating for once.”

She rolled her eyes and took another bite. “I feel like all I do is throw up and eat.” She smirked, “Well, that and sleep.”

“And fuck.” I added, enjoying the way she blushed and looked over at the kitchen where our staff was actively ignoring us.

“Nico.” She hissed and shook her head. “None of those things are under my control anymore. It’s all his fault.” She tapped her belly with a shrug, and I grinned.

“Takes after his dad then.” I agreed, enjoying how she took to calling our baby a boy over the last few days, instead of fighting me on my wishful thinking.

To be honest, I was going to be ecstatic with either a boy or a girl, it didn’t matter. But I had a feeling it was a boy.

Arianna rolled her eyes and took another large bite, seconds later she coughed, covering her mouth politely. She grabbed her glass of water and took a sip before coughing again as her brows pinched together.

“Are you okay?” I asked, laying my fork down as she wiped her mouth with her napkin, swallowing and coughing again. “Arianna!” I snapped as anxiety tightened around my spine. “What’s wrong?”

Molly, Alec, and Manny all stopped what they were doing as Arianna looked at me with panic in her eyes and grabbed her throat.

“Fish.” She strained as tears pooled in her eyes again.

“Molly!” I bellowed, looking over at the woman a second before she tore off through the kitchen towards one of the kits I had stocked throughout the house in strategic places. “Easy.” I shoved my chair back, toppling it over as Arianna gripped the edge of the table with white knuckles. I threw the table away from us, scattering the food and wine all over the floor as I knelt in front of Ari. “Deep breath, baby.” I put my hands on each side of her face as she looked around in panic. “Focus on me, sweetheart. Look at me and focus. If you panic, it will get worse,” I reminded her.

After she told me of her extreme allergy to shellfish, I did extensive research on the condition, trained my staff to identify allergens and how to administer treatment to her, and stocked the house with every medication known to man for just this situation.

“My throat’s closing,” She rasped, coughing and trying to clear the blockage in her throat out of instinct but it was in vain. Her face reddened, the swelling in her mouth worsening as Molly skidded to a stop next to us, throwing the kit on the ground and tearing it open.

“Here,” She handed the pen to me, and I ripped the cap off and pushed Arianna’s dress up, baring her thigh, and stabbed her with it.

Arianna hissed and scrunched her face up as I injected the medicine into her leg. She grabbed my shirt in her small fists as it burned through her muscles.

“What’s happening?” Matteo barked, running into the room with Saul and Dio following in. It was only then that I noticed the alarm system going off around the house.

It was the medical alarm I’d implemented to go off as soon as the EpiPen kit was removed from its base.

“There was fish in her food.” Molly cried, tears running down her own face as Arianna struggled to breathe.

“How?” Matteo barked to the Chef who was tearing apart tortellini strewn across the floor from Arianna’s plate with his bare fingers.

“I wouldn’t,” Alec shook his head in pure fear and disbelief. “I don’t keep any shellfish in the house. Not since that first night with the lobster bisque.” He looked at me where I still held onto Arianna, waiting for the medication to take effect. “I swear I didn’t put anything in her food.”

“Figure out what it is, and then we can find out who did it,” I snapped, looking back to my wife. “It should be helping by now,” I snapped, cursing as I noticed the blue hue on her lips. “Fuck!” I roared, tearing the kit open for another round.

“I’ll get the car to the door.” Matteo ran from the room to the garage, men filed out after him to start the convoy we would need to get to the hospital in record time.

I stabbed another round of medication into Arianna’s thigh as her head started lolling front and back as a gurgling rattle began to escape from her lips. Molly held her against her chest, talking calmly into her ear and stroking her hair, begging her to keep breathing. As soon as the medication was done being administered, I scooped Arianna up in my arms and tore through the house to the front door.

“Manny!” I yelled as I ran, “Find out who did this!”

“Yes, Sir,” He nodded, working with Alec to dissect the food for evidence of what was used against my wife.

Matteo skidded to a stop in my SUV and four more joined the lineup, parking ahead and behind the truck in a convoy. I jumped inside with Arianna in my arms and Molly slid in beside me before the trucks roared out of the driveway.

“Stay with me, baby,” I whispered, staring into her glassy eyes as she lay in my arms.

“The medication should have kicked in by now,” Molly cried with panic. “Why hasn’t it kicked in?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted defeatedly. “I promise I’ll find out though.” I kissed Ari’s forehead, wiping away the sweat that stuck to her brow as she clung to me.
