“I’m fine, how are you?” I asked as anxiety crawled up my spine. “Why are you calling?”

Nico put his hand on my shoulder, rubbing the tense muscles and lending his physical support.

“I have some news, and I wanted to share it with you personally,” Carmine said and I could sense the gloomy turn to his mood. “Father knows that Nico has issued his death warrant. And he knows you’ve aligned yourself with your husband, over him.”

“How?”

“There’s a mole in the Don’s close circle, though I don’t know who.”

“Damnit.” I cursed, and Nico’s hand tensed on my shoulder before he slid around the front of me and picked me up before sitting down in the chair with me on his lap. I put the call on speaker and held it between us. “You’re on speaker and Nico is here, so repeat that, Carmine.”

My brother sighed and then chuckled, “Package deal, got it.” He joked. “My father knows of your intention to kill him, and he knows that Arianna has chosen to stand by your side, instead of his. Your ship leaks.”

“Where is he?” Nicolas asked, ignoring everything else. It wasn’t news to him if I had to guess.

“He won’t say.” Carmine sighed. “He doesn’t trust anyone now that Arianna has proven his own child will turn their back on him.”

“Are you safe?” I asked, “Does he know you’re helping us? What about the others?”

“He’s still trusting me with the day-to-day shit, so I’m guessing he has no idea that I’m the mole in his own home. The others are clueless to what I’m doing, so they’re safe.”

“They’re not safe Carmine, he knows my only weakness was you guys. If he wants to get revenge for everything, he’ll hurt one of you to get it. Look at what he did to Cristian.” I cried, as panic set in.

“Easy, Sunshine.” Carmine cooed, and Nico ran his hand up and down my back. “I’m keeping tabs on everything. I’ll keep them safe.”

“We need to find him, Carmine, the sooner he’s taken care of, the sooner everyone can breathe easier.” I dropped my hand to my stomach, cradling the little babe that was now almost eight weeks along. Time was flying while I lived on the edge of uncertainty.

“I know, I’m going to figure it out. I just have to do it the right way, so I don’t blow the whole fucking thing.” Carmine replied.

“Carmine,” Nico interrupted, “We don’t have time to leave him alive and unchecked. Arianna is pregnant. I won’t allow her and our child to be his target.”

We hadn’t told anyone yet about our news, aside from Molly and Matteo. And I stared in shock at my husband as he told my brother without talking it over first.

“Wow.” Carmine whistled through the line, “Congratulations you two.”

“Thanks,” I replied gently, feeling better for having someone know our news, but also fearful of letting it out into the universe.

“This stress isn’t good for her, Carmine.” Nico replied coolly, “So maybe from now on when you call me, you’ll take that into account and just fucking tell me what you have to share as I told you to do a dozen times.”

Carmine chuckled lightly, “Noted, Capa. I just wanted to make sure Arianna got the whole picture and wasn’t left out of the decision-making. Considering it involves her.”

“Yeah, well now you know better.” Nico snapped, “Don’t call back unless you have news that will actually help us.” He hit the end button and I stared at him in shock.

“That was rude.” I deadpanned, “I didn’t even say goodbye.”

“Something tells me he’ll be calling back soon.” Nico rolled his eyes, tossing the phone down on the table next to the chair. “How are you feeling?” He asked, running his fingers up the back of my neck and into the hair at the bottom of my head, massaging the tension away.

“Mmh,” I moaned, “Shh, no talking. Just rub me.” I closed my eyes and let his touch melt me until I leaned against him heavily. “I’ve been lonely lately.” I stuck my bottom lip out in a pout to add humor to it to try to alleviate how the statement made me feel.

I felt pathetic.

And needy.

And whiney.

And emotional.

And very un-me.
