While I wasn’t entirely corporeal here, I knew that my spirit had traveled to this place, as had Solstice’s. I could sense my body as if it was far away, lying limp in Killian’s arms.

Topaz likewise keened with concern, my dragon having followed me into the darkness where no one else could follow.

A slight tug urged my spirit to keep going.

Listening to my instincts, I clicked my tongue and urged Solstice to turn upright. She swirled and I floated onto her back. I held onto the talons that poked out from her neck. It wasn’t exactly like riding in real life. Even though I had a body, gravity didn’t seem to work the same way when I rode her in spirit form.

It made me wonder if this was what it had been like when she’d been nothing but a golden finch. She’d managed to make herself corporeal in the small form, but before that, had she floated around, seeking my soul to bind onto?

As Solstice took me up instead of down, I was about to reprimand her until I noticed that the storm swirled around an epicenter.

And in the middle… the wall of darkness dove down until it hit the ground. A crater the size of a castle glistened with a single treasure at the bottom of it.

The Dragon Egg I hunted.

But it wasn’t alone.

Dark Elves surrounded it, looking lost and confused. They grabbed their heads and screamed as if in pain and cried out for help.

I’d never seen anything like this.

They were supposed to be creatures of the dark… but this corruption ate away at their skin, leaving trails of dark motes to drift toward the egg.

It slowly absorbed the lost essence of the Dark Elves, leaving a shield of shimmering black oil to glisten all around it like a protective sphere.

Whatever was going on wasn’t going to end well. If that egg hatched like this, a Lost Queen would be reborn into darkness.

And I would lose before my adventure had even begun.

“Up,” I whispered into Solstice’s ear.

She reared her head and roared into the skies and she shot up, sending us back home.

CHAPTER 4

When I opened my eyes, I blinked up at the ceiling of my dorm. I smiled, because a scattering of magical silver dots spanned the entire exterior and the walls.

Dwarven magic had become scarce, but one of my favorites was how it could emulate the stars. Something about it twinkled like diamonds, probably because dwarves understood what made precious stones mimic celestial objects better than anyone.

A gentle weight rested on my arm and I turned my head to find Killian asleep at my side. His fist clutched my wrist and his other held onto something.

I sensed more than dwarven magic. When I pried his hand open, I gasped.

A pristine white feather.

Even though he’d been holding it quite tightly, nothing seemed to ruffle its perfect texture.

Running my fingers over it, I admired the silky quality.

Was it glowing? Maybe I was still dreaming.

I glanced out the window to see Solstice curled up with Topaz beside her within the private wyvern stall that had been installed a few weeks prior. We’d been moved to a new dorm that allowed our dragons to stay close instead of roosting with the others.

Protesting any special treatment only made the Dean dig her heels in more. That’s why the private stall included a trough that magically refilled with raw meat and water for the dragons whenever they wanted.

Glancing back down at Killian, I ran my fingers through his white hair which was just as silky as the strange feather he’d been holding onto.

“Killian?” I asked, surprised to find my voice scratchy and hoarse. I cleared my throat and tried again. “Hey, wake up.”
