I screamed from the pain, but the energy it supplied me made me feel more alive than I’d ever felt before.

The Lost Queen I held onto didn’t seem to like it. The egg formed three more fissures, threatening to crumble into pieces.

My fingers clutched around the crystal of their own accord as if I’d been electrocuted. My mind raced as I fell to one knee and my broken rib painfully stabbed into my side, making it impossible to breathe.

The mark on my arm blazed to life, filling me with light and energy that combated the pain.

I looked up again and my vision filled with gold. The clouds broke away everywhere I looked as my magic blasted into the skies.

The crystal he’d given me… it was helping me access my goddess blood, somehow.

When I looked down again, my uncle was nowhere to be found.

The bars broke a second later and the armies raced through, but Solstice had found the opening I’d made and she dove through it.

Crouching, I readied myself for the jump. I only had one arm to do this with, but I wasn’t going to leave empty handed.

The corrupted Dark Elves barreled toward me and one tossed a spear. I dove to the side as I barely avoided the weapon. It sank into the dirt and Solstice released a wave of golden fire.

The moment she reached me she twisted to her side and I launched onto her back. I clutched onto the saddle and hauled myself over with all of my might. My rib screamed in protest, but I ignored it.

Killian and Topaz broke through the skies as we soared upward to meet them. Only two Wild Dragons still followed him, clearly wounded as blood ran down their flanks.

Killian, though, hadn’t come out unscathed. Blistered scars marred the right side of his face and my heart twisted at the sight.

This way, he ordered in my mind and turned toward the portal.

I followed suit, leaning into Solstice to give her speed.

And we rushed through to the other side.

Victorious.

But for some reason… it didn’t feel like we had won.

CHAPTER 11

My mother fussed over me as the Healers did their work. My rib refused to heal, no matter the power of my goddess blood rushing through my veins or their efforts to use other types of magic.

Killian’s burns likewise had crusted over into scars. He’d grown quiet as he rested on the bed beside mine.

“Killian?” I asked, but he had his back to me.

“I’m sleeping,” he said.

That made me laugh. “Then why are you talking?”

“I sleep talk. Didn’t you know?”

“Hmm,” I said, allowing him to win this one.

He didn’t want me to see his face, but what did I care about scars?

I was just grateful he was alive.

The issue of disagreement between us still remained, but I put that on the back burner. We weren’t going to be entering into a new battle anytime soon.

And plus, we still had the mystery of the bracelet, my uncle, and the newly hatched Dragon Queen to worry about.
