It’s been a year since the night I went home with Hollis. And what a year it’s been. Travis is still in jail. He’s asked to talk to me but I said no. I learned everything I needed to the day he was caught. I remember the pain I was in when he abandoned us, but now I’m glad he did. If he hadn’t, I never would’ve met Hollis. Or if I did, I never would’ve gone home with him. And my life wouldn’t be what it is today.

Maddie has changed so much this last year. She was always a happy kid. After Travis and Shawna took her, she shut down for a while. But lately she’s started talking about how scared she was when it happened. How even though Shawna told her I didn’t want her, she knew that was a lie. She said she kept telling herself that Hollis and I would come and rescue her. She also told us Shawna hit her because she wouldn’t listen to her. It happened more than once in the ten hours they had her.

I wish I had been able to get my hands on her. But at the same time, I’m glad she’s dead. We never have to worry about her coming after our baby again.

We got married a month ago, which Charmy won’t stop teasing me about. She and Liam still aren’t married, but they will be next month. Hollis didn’t want to wait for them to get married first. Okay, wedidn’t want to wait.

My husband. Sometimes I find myself just staring at him, wondering how I got so lucky for him to have chosen me. There’s been some new bunnies at the clubhouse and they’ve learned real fast that they can’t put their hands on him. Some have made comments about me and my physique. They got banned pretty quick, and the other bunnies are learning to keep their hands off my man and their mouths shut.

Hollis

My wife. She thinks she’s the lucky one in this marriage. But she’s wrong. That title goes to me. My cupcake is the most beautiful woman inside and out. She’s not only become my wife, but she’s given me a family. I thought I had everything I needed. Then I met her, and Maddie. Now that we’re married, I spend my time bugging her to have more babies. I mean, Maddie is six now and I think it’s time to give her some siblings.

“Morning, cupcake.”

“Morning, my love.”

I wrap my arms around her. “What are you doing today?”

“Well, I have a doctor’s appointment at nine-thirty.”

I frown. “Is something wrong? Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. Would you like to come with me?”

“Of course I want to come. Are you sure you’re okay?” I ask again. This is the first time she’s mentioned an appointment.

“I promise, I’m okay. It’s just a regular visit.”

There’s something in Lila’s voice that I just can’t put my finger on. It sounds like she’s keeping something from me. And I don’t like it.

“We should get up and get breakfast going,” she says as she stretches.

I squint at her and she starts to giggle. Now I know she’s keeping something from me. But I’ll play along for now.

After we eat breakfast and send Maddie off to school with Granchio, we both get dressed for her appointment.

“Do you want to take my bike? Or the cage?” I ask her.

“I’d like to ride the bike today. One day I might not be able to ride with you.”

Wait, what? Why wouldn’t she be able to ride with me? I don’t know what to say, so I frown at her more.

“Stop frowning at me, Hollis. I know you’re trying to figure out if something is wrong with me. Nothing’s wrong. I promise.”

I continue to frown at her as we finish getting ready. Lila puts an address into the map on my phone and we’re off. I follow where it tells me to go.

When we get to the doctor’s office, I stand with Lila as she checks in. They say it’s going to just be a few minutes, so we go and sit down in the waiting room. Finally after what feels like years, they call Lila’s name. They show us to a room and tell me to wait there while they take her to get her vitals and whatever else they do back there. I look around the room and see lots of baby stuff on the walls. Lila comes back in and sits on the table.

“They said the doctor will be with us in a few minutes,” she says.

“What’s the appointment for?” I ask her.

“You’ll see.” She gives me a smile.

Again it feels like we’ve been waiting for a really long time. There’s a knock at the door and it opens.

“Hi, I’m April, the ultrasound tech. You must be Lila and Hollis. It’s nice to meet you both,” she says as she shakes our hands. “Okay, Lila, I’m going to have you lay back and I’ll get the machine up and running.”
