“Pain is part of life, right? We learned that from mom and dad. And I definitely learned that from Travis. So if he hurts me? I’ll be okay.”

“And if he hurts Maddie?”

“Then I’ll kill him.”

Carter sighs again. “Okay, sis. For you, I’ll give him a chance. One. But if he fucks it up? He won’t get another.”

I hug him tight. “I’m glad I have you as my brother.”

We walk back out and join the others.

“Is everything okay?” Hollis asks as we sit down.

“Everything’s good.” I smile as we watch Maddie play. “What time do we need to leave?”

“We should get going in a few.”

We hang out with Carter and Diana for about an hour before Hollis says we should head out.

“I can watch Maddie if you want,” Carter says to me.

“Thank you, big brother. But I want her to meet the rest of the club.”

ChapterEight

Hollis

Having Lila and Maddie at our monthly barbecue is making me want to strut around like a proud peacock with my tail feathers on full display. I have a gorgeous woman and a beautiful daughter. It feels like Maddie’s already mine, like Lila is. Watching her run around with my club brothers makes me laugh. My huge biker brothers are falling all over each other, acting like fools just to make a little girl laugh. It’s hilarious.

“I can’t believe they’re doing that for Maddie,” Lila says, wrapping her arms around me.

“You’re family, cupcake. My family. From this day forward, this club will do anything for you and Maddie. Even if you choose not to be with me.”

Holding her close, I can hear her sniffle. I wish she would tell me about her parents. Maybe soon. If anyone knows about having shitty parents, it’s me. But then again, maybe she had really good parents and she lost them. Hearing Maddie squeal pulls me out of my thoughts.

“Save me, Hollis!” She giggles as she jumps into my arms. I take off, running away from my brothers, holding Maddie close. She’s laughing so hard I’m afraid she’s going to pass out. I hide behind Lila as five of my brothers come barreling towards us.

It’s like watching a cartoon with the way they try to stop before they knock her over. They end up in a heap, millimeters from Lila’s feet. Maddie can’t stop laughing, Lila’s joined in, and I’m pretty sure I heard her snort which makes everyone within hearing distance start laughing too.

I hug Lila. “You’re adorable.” I laugh.

“Oh my god, that was embarrassing.”

“No way. That was the cutest snort I’ve ever heard.”

She turns to look at me and rolls her eyes. “Snorting is never cute.”

“Well I would say I agree, but not after hearing yours.” I kiss her before she can respond.

“Unfair.” She giggles, then looks up at me. “Being here at the barbecue is different this time. When the MC first invited our group of girls, I thought it would be fun. But it got harder and harder to be here. I watched you all the time. You didn’t do anything with the other women, but just seeing them try was rough. I never thought we’d find our way to each other.”

“I wish I had known how you felt. If I had, I never would’ve waited this long to tell you how I feel. I’ve wanted to be with you since that first night. I just didn’t know how to tell you.”

“I was worried you thought I was a slut because I went home with you that night.”

“I would never think that about you, cupcake.” I kiss her and hold her tight.

“I still don’t get why you chose me. The women around you are so much more than me.”
