Clearing my throat, I look away briefly. Am I worthy of becoming the center of this woman’s life?

Lina
I look around my workshop and feel incredibly grateful. Light pours into the large room, making the row of shelves filled with thread look like a rainbow.
The space feels luxurious, and I realize I’m no longerSad Lina. I’m a hopeful new version of myself and should give much of the credit to my husband.
The weeks after our first date have been filled with conversation, meals, and outings. Yuri’s agreed to every silly date idea I’ve come up with and even arranged a private ride on the Swan boat through the Botanical Gardens. We’ve eaten at the city’s best ethnic restaurants, listened to music in small venues where we made out like kids, and taken long walks on the city’s beaches.
My big bad gangster has a heart of gold and shows me every day that he wants our marriage to flourish. Shaking out my hair, I pray the thing we’re building will withstand the threats surrounding us.
“Here you are.”
I look up and see my husband standing in the doorway. “You look veryMaster of the Universe.” I join him, smooth out the lapel on his beautiful navy blue pinstripe suit, and then tweak the white pocket square. Letting out a low whistle, I love that he’s not wearing a tie, so the intricate tattoo on his chest is exposed. “What does it feel like to be the king of the jungle? Does it ever get boring to be the master of everything you survey?”
“No.” He pushes my hair back. “The way people scatter and shake is kind of entertaining.”
Pulling him down, I kiss him lightly. “If we didn’t have an appointment with Grandmother, I would take you upstairs and—”
His fingers press against my lips. “Don’t tempt me to cancel the meeting.”
“As if you would do that. It’s taken weeks to get it set up.” I step back and fix the clip holding back my hair. “Does this dress hit the right note?” Smoothing out the front of the blue sheath, I bite my lip. “I want Olga to like me…and approve.”
“If she doesn’t see how fucking incredible you are, then she can take her opinions back to the frozen streets of Moscow and stay there.”
He leans over and gives me a kiss that is equal parts passion and tenderness. “The woman will be lucky to have any place in your life.”
“You’re just saying that because I make you breakfast every morning.”
“It’s more than scrambled eggs, my love. You are the light that leads me away from hell.”
We gaze at one another as he softly slides his thumb over my cheek. “You have my whole heart, Yuri.” Something sits between us. Heavy. Expectant. “And you make me want to do better.”
“I would set the world on fire and steal the stars if I thought it would make you happy.”
He pulls me to his chest, and I wonder if this is where our fairy tale begins. “Would you let me drive your car instead?” I look up. “It might be easier than grabbing a few balls of burning hot gas.”
“I’m gonna stick with my original offer.”
“But I’m getting so much better.” I step back, sliding my hands on my hips. “I didn’t hit one thing during our last lesson.”
“That’s because there was nothing to hit. The warehouse parking lot had no light poles… dividers… or solid objects.”
