Letting out a long breath, I walk to the large windows overlooking the busy street. “Whatever grief she carried was lodged so deeply that it was unreachable. Nothing would assuage it, so it turned into fear. It was like a thorn that skin and bone had grown around.”

“Protection and wound rolled into one.”

“Yes.” I return to where Yuri is standing. “But all that doesn’t matter because she gave me more magic than darkness, and I miss her terribly despite the challenges of being her daughter.”

“That must be where your kindness comes from.”

“Kindness?”

“I noticed it the first time we met and every time we encountered one another.” He pushes my hair over my shoulder. “It’s otherwordly and reminds me there are places where only patience and good intentions reside.”

“You make me sound like a saint. Something we both know that I’m not.”

“In comparison to me, you are.”

“You married a stranger so she wouldn’t be kidnapped for her fortune. I think that makes you pretty selfless.”

“I’m just doing what I was built to do. I have been made into a weapon, and you are my treasure to protect.”

His dark eyes crawl slowly over my face. Why does this brutal man make feel seen like no one ever has?

“When you said yes and agreed to become my wife, a shaft of light pierced the darkest place in my soul.” We both move closer. “If someone like you trusts me with their fate, then something must be redeemable within me. Something worth loving.”

“I think there is a great deal to love about you.” I lift his hand and kiss it. “A person who lives a spiritual life is capable of sin and horror, the same way a person who commits crimes is capable of kindness and acts of service. Nobody is ever one thing, and those who claim to be above reproach are the ones that scare me the most.”

“Then it’s good you married the Bratva monster since I don’t hide my nature or what I’m capable of.”

“Speaking of monsters, when will we see some from Russia?” My husband’s eyes lock on my mouth. “You’re hungry expression tells me you’re no longer listening.”

“You want to know about the idiots who should be arriving any day and what that means for your well-being.”

“Well…yes.”

“I can focus on two things at once.”

“What’s the other thing you’re thinking about?”

“Eating your sweet pussy and getting your honey on my tongue before we go upstairs.”

My cheeks heat. “Yuri—”

“What?” His hand drifts down my body. “I enjoy the taste of my wife.”

His feral smile makes my stomach flip in anticipation. “If you try and look less like a lion, I might believe whatever justification you’re about to spin.”

“I don’t need to defend my desire for my wife. It’s to be expected.” He drags his eyes over my T-shirt and yoga pants. “In fact, I might be convicted if I wasn’t thinking of at least a dozen ways to please you.”

I place both my hands on his face and kiss his lips. “For a man who claims to speak as little as possible, you sure are loquacious about certain subjects.” His hand slides inside my leggings, pushing aside my panties. “Husband—”

“Wife—”

His thumb presses against my clit, and I suck in a breath as his fingers caress my folds. I grasp his arm and shift closer. “We’re supposed to be talking about a game plan, a—”

“I will destroy anyone who tries and become their worst nightmare. No one will twist one of your stars into shadows, and if they so much as think about it, I will show them what true suffering means.”

“My very own dragon.” A flood of sensations threatens to overwhelm me. Between his talented fingers and his proclamations, I’m at his mercy.

“Your personal monster.”
