“Everything and everyone has a bad day now and again. The point is, you will have enough money to get rid of him and create the life you want.”

“I suppose that’s true.” We stop next to the flower shop. “But let’s look over the candidates just to be sure. Maybe there’s a Chris Evans look-alike that we missed.”

“Ugh. Chris Evans is so square. He would be a boring lover.”

“Please say that louder. I think the old men playing chess missed it.” She waves to the group. “I’m not going to have time to make a dress.”

“Then we will find one that makes you feel like the heiress you are.”

I picture the ceremony and feel my stomach drop. Running away wouldn’t solve my problems forever, but it sure would be fun.

Twenty minutes later, we’re settled on the couch, and I wonder why all the men are starting to look the same. “What about him?” I move the laptop closer and study the picture. “Luka Golovin.”

“He’s very handsome. And nice. I spoke with him at the wedding.”

“Do you like him?”

“I don’t not like him.”

“Stasia! That’s not helpful.”

“We had a ten-minute conversation. Nothing stood out either way.”

“Maybe that’s good. A man who is neutral would be easy to cohabitate with.” I hear a sharp knock on the door. “Who could that be?”

“I’ll get it.” Stasia pops up. “You keep looking.”

I slide my finger across the screen and study the next candidate as a deep voice carries from the foyer.

“A suitor has come to make his pitch.” Stasia sweeps her arm up as she enters the room. “Bachelor number forty-two. Yuri Novikov. Looks like a mean Russian bear. And acts like one too.”

Laughing from my belly, I cover my mouth. “Are you a mean bear, Yuri?”

“Yes.” He looks between us and frowns.

“Definitely not a conversationalist,” Stasia says as she walks around him. “But perhaps his physique and skills in bed will make up for that.” She taps her mouth. “Nice hair. That’s a plus. And he smells nice.” She looks up. “What’s that cologne? Eau de enforcer?”

“Is she almost done?”

“It’s hard to say.” I hold up the laptop. “We’re choosing my husband.”

“That’s a waste of time since you already have one.”

Rolling my eyes, I snort. “You need to work on your listening skills.”

“I would say the same thing about you.”

“Playful banter. I love it.” Stasia joins me on the couch. “Sex doesn’t start when you take your clothes off. It begins hours earlier, and banter is an important ingredient.” She waves her hand. “Yuri, you should be taking notes.”

“You would be perfect for my brother.” He sits in the velvet chair and adjusts his holster. “Since you’re both annoying.”

“If you’re talking about Vlad, I’ll pass. He’s parked his car in too many garages.”

“Really?” Stasia’s mouth pinches together as she nods. “That means Yuri has too.”

“What the hell are you two talking about?”

“Don’t shout.”
