“I will wait for you on the sidewalk so you can say goodby to your mother.”

My mouth opens and closes with nothing coming to mind.

Grabbing a small rock, I place it on Mama’s headstone. “I love you. We will talk more next week. I have to deal with an irritating and imperious man.”

I stride toward Yuri and feel his penetrating gaze along every inch of my skin. “I appreciate the offer, but I’m happy to take the bus.”

“I’m also impatient.” He shifts his enormous shoulders. “But rarely impulsive.”

“You eavesdropped?”

“You’re voice carried on the wind.”

Crossing my arms, I tip my chin up. “I stand by my original assessment.”

“I wouldn’t expect anything else.”

“Why?”

“Because you have strong convictions.” He moves closer. “I wanted a crease in my black pants, but you refused and forbid me from ruining the look of the suit.”

“I was helping. And offering my professional advice.”

“You told me what to do with a five thousand dollar suit, so perhaps you are imperious too.”

He lifts my hand and I study the tattoos on his knuckles. “I’m a seamstress. Not a,” I press my lips together for a second, “Bratva beast.”

“I’m a beast?”

Dropping my gaze, I nod.

“Lina?”

“I’m not looking up, and you can’t make me.” He drops my bag next to our feet and lifts me up like I’m a feather. “What are you doing?”

His voice drops to a husky whisper. “Making you.”

My eyes are drawn to his lips. “Why?”

“Because we won’t keep secrets from one another.”

“That’s unlikely.” His grip loosens, and I slowly slide down his body, feeling the thunder of my heartbeat.

“Care to elaborate?”

“No.” I slip my hand away. “I’ll just—”

“You listed protection as a desirable quality last night, so I’m protecting you from public transportation.”

“Dragons don’t usually take the bus on Sunday, so I’m quite safe.”

“Noted.” He retakes my hand. “But I won’t be satisfied until you’re one thousand percent safe.”

Snickering, I push my sandal over the sidewalk. “Couldn’t make yourself say a hundred percent, could you?”

“I didn’t even try.” He leads me toward the parking lot. “Eventually, you will tell me everything.”

“Sure, Yuri. Right after, I quit eating cookies, commit to a regular workout routine and deny myself the pleasure of watching Turkish dramas on Netflix.”
